7 amazing songs that don't have a chorus

The chorus is one of the most vivid and memorable parts of the song. In a way, it determines the commercial success of a track, its popularity among listeners. It's hard to believe, but there are a number of songs in the music industry that managed to become legendary without a chorus.

1. Queen - "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Good old-fashioned rock. Instead of one chorus, you can hear six choruses. Which one would you like to focus on specifically? The opener "Mama, just killed a man"? What about "Figaro"? Or "Nothing really matters"? What about all of them together? Whatever your preference, Mercury, Taylor and the other band members proved that a track doesn't have to be straightforward to be successful, to become a hit.

2 The Verve - "Bittersweet Symphony"

The driving force behind the track is the orchestral harmony (taken from the Rolling Stones' symphonic version of "The Last Time"). Bright and omnipresent arrangements seem to push the song forward, taking the sound to a whole new level. At the same time, they don't put too much tension on the listener, allowing him to enjoy the music.

3. R.E.M. - "Losing My Religion."

The rock band's legendary song was released as the lead single for the album "Out of Time". Initially not a huge success due to low radio airplay, it became the biggest hit of its time, soaring to number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The track topped the music charts for over 21 weeks, and the lack of a chorus didn't stop it from earning several prestigious awards and nominations.

4. Bob Dylan - "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

Although most Bob Dylan singles do without choruses (take "All Along The Watchtower" for example), "Subterranean Homesick Blues" raises the stakes considerably. Each verse of the song is so melodic and catchy that it doesn't need any additional musical detail. Add a cool video to a pretty good track, and who would even remember the chorus?

5. Pink Floyd - "Money"

For a long time after the departure of Syd Barrett, the founder and main inspirer of the band, Pink Floyd never had a single full-fledged hit. The musicians released a couple or three songs a year, which allowed them to continue their creative activity, to stay afloat. Things were like that until the release of "Money". The track, combining a killer riff and unusual musical moves, became a real symbol of rock'n'roll.

6. Black Sabbath - "Paranoid"

Who needs choruses when there are riffs like these anyway? Even the live performance of this song is so upbeat and poignant that you don't realise you're still singing the first verse after three minutes of active headbanging.

7. Jefferson Airplane - "White Rabbit"

Not only the lyrics of this triptych 1960s rock classic inspired by "Alice in Wonderland" (think of the line suggesting you witness a hookah-smoking caterpillar), but the song structure itself is absolutely amazing. Instead of using a chorus, the musicians make their way to a magnificent climax. Presented by a multitude of musical instruments, it takes listeners into the dreamy and slightly crazy atmosphere of Carroll's original work. Stay away from the brown acid, kids. And clear your heads.
