Top 9 "plywood" performances of famous musicians

A list of the most notable foreign veneer performances...

Top 9 "plywood" designs

"He opens his mouth like a crucian carp on the sand... But instead of wings, plywood rattles behind his back..." These quotes from Yuri Shevchuk's song "Phonogrammer", as well as the track as a whole, are "dedicated" to Russian pop, who preferred not to strain their vocal cords on stage. Phonogram was and still is an integral part of Russian show business.

But even Western performers were not always honest, live, in front of the public. In this selection, we recall plywood performances that turned out to be a joke, a scandal, PR, forced, and even cost some of the foreign performers their careers.

Ashlee Simpson

In the first half of the 2000s, Ashley was at the peak of popularity. And in 2004, at one of the performances of the singer's voice has already sounded, but she has not even opened her mouth yet, and the microphone was in the lowered hand. Simpson tried to somehow save the situation, began some "shamanic dances", but then just left the stage. Later the performer blamed it on the musicians. They said that the guys started to play the wrong song. But the audience saw and heard everything themselves. After that in 2008 only one album was released, but it remained unnoticed. One more attempt to come back was made by Ashley in 2012, but the triumphant "comeback" failed again.

And these Portuguese guys, thanks to plywood and YouTube, became famous all over the world. The band performed one of their songs on TV. The frontman fell into the audience. His voice, meanwhile, continues to resound as if nothing had happened. If you watch the video carefully, you will notice that the musicians' instruments are not connected to any equipment.

The Beatles

The great Liverpudlians had to perform to a backing track too. In the '60s there was a TV programme called Thank Your Lucky Stars. The Beatles appeared on it many times from 1963 to 1966. The project didn't even hide its "phoniness". Not only the instruments were not plugged in, but no microphones were given to the performers. This "outrage" existed on TV for about five years. However, even for such a short period for the TV programme, almost two thousand musicians and singers performed on its platform.

Placebo

The band was invited to the Sanremo Festival in 2001. It was initially agreed that the musicians would sing with a phonograph. The attitude of rock musicians to plywood is well known, so Brian Molko was still on edge on the plane. And then they lost the luggage of the band at the airport. Then Brian was insulted backstage by Italian humourist Ceccherini.

Besides, the audience in the hall was "packed" and wanted to get 4000 quid worth of aesthetic pleasure for their 400 quid. Brian turned his performance into a farce and an obvious mockery. He pointed his middle finger at the camera, mangled the amplifier with his guitar (or, rather, vice versa), bowed mockingly, and called the Ariston Theatre a "c...m circus". Molko was escorted out of the building by security. In short, even the "plywood" number turned into a real rock'n'roll.

 Lin Miaoke

This name doesn't mean much to anyone, so for reference: a 9-year-old performer who performed at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. And there's a reason she's on this list.

Lin's number impressed millions of sports fans. But, the problem is that the girl didn't sing in her own voice. The real singer of the Olympic song is Yang Peiyu. It's just that her teeth didn't seem perfectly straight to the organisers. Moreover, Yang's bite, according to the members of the Olympic Organising Committee, could seriously damage China's international reputation.

C+C Music Factory

The 90's dance hit "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" is known even to those who avoided discos a mile away. Martha Wash sang it. But in the video it is "performed" by C+C Music Factory member Zelma Davis. And Martha's name was not even listed on the list of participants in the recording. Justice was restored only after Wash went to court. By the way, Martha's voice on the song "Everybody Everybody" is performed by the band Black Box. And again in the video for the track another woman opens her mouth.

MF Doom

And this story is either an unfunny joke or a provocation to get more attention. MF Doom sent a doppelganger instead of himself on one of his concert tours. He didn't even have to look for someone with a similar face. After all, the rapper performs in a mask. But many concertgoers noticed that the figure of the idol is not the same, and the microphone at some concerts was clearly not switched on.

The director of the nightclub, where one of the performances of pseudo-Doom was held, later stated that he did not see the musician's face, as he came to the club with his face covered. The rapper himself at first denied everything, said that he just lost weight, and in general at concerts should go to listen to music, not to look at the performer. But in 2010 he still appeared on stage in his own person while there was a lookalike.

J.Lo

Jennifer's "phonerism" is not a confirmed fact. However, on the web not only fans of the artist, but also fans of the artist are actively discussing the topic that many of Lopez's songs sound like someone else's voices. This applies to both recordings and concerts.

Especially often remember the situation with the compositions "I'm Real" and "Play". Singers Ashanti and Christina Milian took part in their performance. Officially, they are mentioned as backing vocalists. But on the Internet there are many supporters of the version that these singers contributed much more to the creation of tracks than J.Lo herself.

Katy Perry

And, lastly, a funny episode about how it wasn't the voice that was "fanised" but the melody. Katy Perry once decided to show that her talent is much more extensive than fans believe. Performing one of the compositions, the singer brought a flute to her lips. The instrument started to sound, giving out short solos. And then Katy takes the flute aside, but its sounds rejoin the overall composition. However, Perry did not make up anything, but honestly admitted that it was an unsuccessful production, and she took the flute in her hands for the first time at this performance.
