Boris Grebenshchikov (BG) - Grandmothers: Song Idea, Clip...
Содержание
"Grandmothers" is a widely known song by the band Aquarium, written and released in the mid-1980s of the XX century. The composition has a sharp political message: it raises the theme of bans and arrests, which was very topical among rock musicians of that time...
Subsequently, the song "Grandmothers" was re-recorded twice: in 2007 for the album "Feudalism", and in 2019, after which a music video was shot for it (more about it later).
Before recalling the story, and discussing the basic idea of the song, we suggest refreshing your memory with a brief biography of Boris Grebenshchikov (BG).
A bit about Boris Grebenshikov (BG)
Boris Grebenshchikov (BG) is a well-known musician, author and performer among post-Soviet music lovers. His popularity came to him with the band "Aquarium", whose work is not neglected to this day.
In the 1980s (back in the days of the Soviet Union) Boris Grebenshchikov joined the "regiment" of rock musicians who were negatively disposed against the power of the Communist Party. For this reason, most of the artist's songs are satirical lyrics denouncing the Soviet Union and belittling its heroes...
As for today, Boris Grebenshchikov has not revised his position with the passage of time. The Artist took Vladimir Putin's rule in a flip-flop. And even the president's official congratulations on his 65th birthday did not improve the situation...
Grebenshchikov continues to compose songs in which he protests against the current government.
The story and idea behind the song
Now for the more interesting part, the history of the song "Grandmothers".
According to Boris Grebenshchikov himself, the composition "Grandmothers" was born in the mid-1980s. It was at that time that the interest of the law enforcement agencies in unofficial music reached its limit. Rarely could any rock band play their concert to the end.....
"I could never understand why we - rock musicians - were such a nuisance to them! Why were they chasing not spies and criminals, but young guys from a rock club? It's impossible to understand without half a litre..." - Boris Grebenshchikov once said.
As for the meaning, it is quite simple, though well veiled. The composition talks about "grandmothers" and "wolves". As it is not difficult to guess, by grandmothers Grebenshchikov means the very grey wolves, under which the police disguised themselves! Grebenshchikov warns the "grandmothers" against "not doing their own things", hinting at the imminent arrival of the "hunter" (just like in the fairy tale about Little Red Riding Hood).
The recording of the album "Feudalism" began in the 1980s, but the record was released only in 2007. It included the song "Grandmothers".
A re-recorded version (featuring British rock musician Lou Edmonds of Public Image Ltd) was released in 2019.
On 1 February 2020, a video clip for Boris Grebenshchikov's song "Grandmothers" was released on YouTube with the support of the Animation and Noise Laboratory. The song is more than three decades old, and now, finally, Boris Grebenshchikov decided to formalise it by creating a video for the song. The plot was based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood....
