All about the famous hit about "Argentina-Jamaica": idea, clip, success
"Argentina-Jamaica 5:0" is a hit track by the rock band Chaif, which was released in the late 1990s. Made in a rhythmic reggae style, this composition was inspired by the famous defeat of the Jamaican team at the 1998 World Cup ... The most curious thing is that Chaif recorded this track when the record itself was completely ready. The leader of the group was in Paris, when, unexpectedly for Shakhrin himself, inspiration visited him near the Eiffel Tower ...
Returning home, he immediately wrote the text for the future hit ... As a result, the song became a very big breakthrough for the band: it won the Golden Gramophone, topped the rating of the main songs of the late 1990s, and also served as a model for a large number of alterations and parodies! Let's remember its fascinating history together...
As mentioned above, the author of the song is Vladimir Shakhrin. The reggae hit was written based on real events, although not the most joyful ones (at least for Jamaicans). However, this did not prevent him from becoming the main summer hit of 1999! The audience accepted Shakhrin's creation with extraordinary insight, given the fact that it had nothing to do with the general concept of the Shekogali album itself. And this is where it all started...
In 1998, Vladimir Vladimirovich was presented with a tourist voucher to France, according to which, in fact, the lead singer of the Chaif group went to the city of love - to Paris. It so happened that in the same period the World Cup was held there - the Jamaican team fought with the Argentina national team! However, in this fight, the team from the sunny island was defeated ... Later Shakhrin would write a whole song about this, but at that time he did not even know that some kind of match was taking place in France ... It will be important to add that for Jamaica this was a really big event : for the first time, a Jamaican team got the right to play in the world championship ... But - alas, ah.
In the evening, when the match was long over, Shakhrin took a measured walk in the area of the Eiffel Tower. Suddenly, his attention was attracted by the drooping Jamaicans: they performed a very insightful song to the beat of drums ... At the same moment, the fans of the Argentina national team were dancing and cheering next to them. It is noteworthy - but, fortunately, no conflicts arose between them. Dumbfounded and inspired by what he saw, the Chaif leader soon wrote one of the biggest hits in Russia in the late 1990s ...
“What I saw really amazed me! When I returned home, the first thing I did was write poetry ... ”Vladimir Vladimirovich later recalled. He also added: "Contrary to popular belief, this song is not about upset fans, not about cheering Argentines, and not even about poor Jamaicans ... This song is about the strong feelings that sports give us ... "
How did the song get on the album?
The track was included in the album "Shekogali" at the last minute: the disc was completely completed, and the band members did not want to include a new song, as they were sure of its failure ... At least because the "Argentina-Jamaica 5:0" dedicated to sports is completely fit into the concept of the album. However, everyone to whom they played this composition unanimously insisted that it was a potential hit! From the memoirs of producer Dmitry Groysman:
“I say:“ It is necessary to record and add to the album. They answered me: “No, what are you talking about, it doesn’t fit the concept!”
Shakhrin, in turn, said: “We tried to play this song at a concert - the audience was delighted! Everyone around just kept saying: “Record, urgently! This is a future hit!
So how did the song about the defeat of Jamaica get on the album? Groysman's word:
“The head of Real Records, Alena Mikhailova, said: “I pay 10 thousand dollars for the album, just shoot the video for the main track yourself!” I called Shakhrin and lied a little, they say we are paid 10 grand, but there is a condition: a new song about Jamaica must be included in the album. He finally agreed...
The music video for this song is also a separate story ... Actually, let's listen to Dmitry Groisman:
“The clip had to be filmed at almost no cost. I went to Alena with a conversation: “I know how to make a video, but I need to record the football match Argentina-Jamaica without channel logos!” As a result, she got me this recording, and I used the footage from the concerts: “Gorbushki” and “Maksidrom”. So, the video cost me a thousand and a half. Well, our net profit was a little more than eight thousand ... "
As a result, the song became a very big hit! She was in the lead in all the charts available at that time, and the clip received wide rotation on television ... From now on, any score with “0” in any game in our country is now commented exclusively on the phrase “what a pain”! The author himself later recalled with a grin:
“When they told me that this song would be the biggest hit of the summer, I just laughed it off! And suddenly I realized how wrong I was ... "
