Without Deception (2000) - Mumiy Troll - All about the song

"I think we just managed to catch the mood of our listener..... We managed to hit the bull's-eye!" - Ilya Lagutenko, the leader of the rock team, said afterwards.

The story of the hit song "No Deception" by Mumiy Troll

"No Deception" is a successful single by the Russian rock band Mumiy Troll from the album "Exactly Mercury Aloe". The track was released in 2000 and quickly caught the attention of a wide audience... A significant role in its promotion was played by the music video, the plot of which is based on an advert for a mysterious perfume "Mercury Aloe No10"!

A bit about the album

"Exactly Mercury Aloe" - this was the title of the third studio album, which was released in early 2000. By the way, there is a rather curious fact connected with this album: at first "Nashe" radio refused to rotate the record, absolutely all the tracks! Except for the composition "Bride?", which became a big hit for the guys from Mumiy Troll.....

The band Mumiy Troll
The band Mumiy Troll

Soon, in order to support the album, the band organised a tour. However, it was the music videos for the hit tracks "Bride?" and "No Deception" that played a big role in promoting the release. By the way: the music video for the last single bribes with its unique plot: flying tractors, perfume corporation centre, beautiful models, band members in cowboy hats... In general - there is something to see! But about it a little later...

The story of the song itself

First off the album "Exactly Mercury Aloe" was the single "Bride?" followed by an equally successful hit track called "Carnival. No". Closer to New Year's Eve, the band filmed a music video, dubbing it "an authentic rock action film." The clip was planned to go into rotation right on New Year's Eve... However... all plans were disrupted by the then president Boris Yeltsin... Thus, the premiere of the "rock action film" was postponed for several weeks.

And so, in February 2000, right during the tour, Mumiy Troll started recording their new hit track, which was called "No Deception". As a result of long work, the single saw the light only in spring of the same year... By the way: the song quickly found its listener....

"I think we just managed to catch the mood of our listener... We managed to hit the bull's-eye!" said Ilya Lagutenko, the leader of the rock band. - Ilya Lagutenko, the leader of the rock team, said afterwards.

Music video

Filming of the music video for the acclaimed hit began just a few months after its release! The band leader didn't waste any time. The musician fuelled the public's interest during live concerts, talking about the mysterious perfume "Mercury Aloe No10". The fact that it was a kind of PR move became clear immediately after the release of the clip....

It is worth emphasising the fact that the video for the song "No Deception" became the first mini-film in the history of the band... If we talk about the plot and the idea of the video, then, of course, there is a kind of irony here, concerning advertising video creation... Fascinating views, fake jewellery, supermodels... As they say: all means are good.

But a particularly observant and perceptive viewer will immediately catch the other side of the story - the world of mysterious odours in which the characters live! It is difficult to take the members of the rock band and the girls-models as a classic crowd... They are something more... They are actors of something mysterious and incomprehensible, but intuitively attractive and curious... The idea of the clip is based on the smell, which can drive you crazy... This smell is like an indicator, it makes you stand out from the crowd of others.

Perhaps, at first glance, the course of events may seem inconsistent... Maybe it is. However, this is not a lack of professionalism on the part of the director. It is a unique idea: cutting off pieces of the spiral, and laying them out in one continuous....

At the beginning of the clip, the protagonist already smells a scent that drives him crazy... He knows that this scent comes from one of the models. By the way: when watching the music video for the song "No Deception" it feels as if the models don't have a physical body at all. That is - they seem to play the role of fragrances! The events unfold, of course, in a huge metropolis! All details play their role: for example, in the clip there is a fusion of different cultures, hints of cheap temptations and a lot of stereotypes....

Influences, remixes ...

Subsequently, the song "No Cheating" received positive reviews from critics:

"When Mumiy Troll perform this song live, the hall turns into Polovtsian dances at sunset..." - the newspapers said.

Over the years, many remixes have been made for the track. Let's take a look at the most successful ones!

The remix was made by Dzuma & Ag - well-known Tallinn DJs specialising in high jazz and synth-pop. The work was characterised as "ecologically flawless"... Critics wrote:

"This prijazz work reveals all the harmony of the song "No Deception"... The sound turned out to be remarkably clean, competent. Exotic motifs add spice in moderation. Quite a fine record that is aimed at successful people..."

"Mumiy Troll look surprisingly stylish! Maybe that's why they have such stylish music" - Dzuma & Ag shared their impressions.

Another remix with a variety of electronic delights was released by Arkady Marto and Boris Nazarov. The work, to great surprise, turned out to be perfect for listeners of completely different musical directions.

"This song had a very high level of quality set from the beginning. We just had no right to lower it..."

And another romanticised work from Ukrainian DJ Vladislav Kreimer. Why romanticised? It's enough to listen to the track...

A broken mirror falls, followed by languid whispers, confessions, and finally, everything fades away... The noises dissolve as if in a fog... Arkady himself commented on his work as follows:

"I wanted to do something very beautiful, heartfelt... My attention was drawn to the female voices, which are relegated to the background in the original..."
