Fuzz Music magazine's top cover of the classic rock hit "Black Dog"
Содержание
Undeniably: Led Zeppelin - is the band that shaped the world of rock 'n' roll. They are true geniuses whose talents have set the bar for live performances and inspired thousands of musicians around the world... Almost every song they've ever written has become a classicbut when it comes to the most powerful hits, fans tend to immediately recall "Black Dog.".
The song, whose title was inspired by the black Labrador that roamed the area near the studio, remains a great classic of all time. A huge contribution to its creation was made by "the quietest." band member - John Paul Jones. His interview suggests that the main source of inspiration was Muddy Waters' experimental blues-psychedelic album Electric Mud:
"I wanted electric blues on a rolling bass line. But I wanted an anti-groove track so it was impossible to dance to!"
The result is an incredibly powerful composition in which, by the way, Robert Plant takes a highest note in the history of Led Zeppelin - you can hear this phenomenal moment on the mark 3:49.
So: the history of this masterpiece is well known to every admirer of classic rock. But... are you familiar with the best covers on one of these? Today we've tried to bring them together so you can enjoy a great interpretation of your favourite hit! Of course, "overwhelm" the original is impossible. But as it seems to us - considering the weight of Zeppelin in the history of rock - these performers did not even set themselves such a goal.
Lou Graham
Few can come close to Robert Plant's vocals, which is why any cover of "Black Dog" almost uselessunless the performer brings something creative, his own... Being one of the leading voices in classic rock, Lou Graham did a great job on this one!
For this reason - thanks to the singer's originality and charisma - this version can safely be called the "one of the best.".
Dread Zeppelin
Speaking of creativity Dread Zeppelin - you either like it or you don't. But when it comes to the "Black Dog" version, we like it a lot!
A parody of Elvis Presleyperforming Led Zeppelin classics with a reggae rhythm - what could sound even crazier?! Nevertheless, that's why the audience loved this band - for its out-of-the-box thinking and versatility! It seems that these guys had a lot of fun…
Masterplan
It's a great version of "Black Dog" from of the German power metal band!
A cover in which the lead singer Jørn Lande tribute to his idol Plant, was included in Masterplan's 2003 debut album. Judging by the comments, many people liked this interpretation.
Deborah Harry
A cover version you probably expected to see here least of all! Yeah, yeah, the iconic blonde. Debbie Harry performing a Zeppelin hit! It seems the Dread Zeppelin version is not the most surprising on our list.
No exaggeration: many listeners were left amazed by this cover and how cool it sounds! We personally especially like the way Debbie uses her punk vocal style at the beginning of the song and then adds a little swing in the middle. She made it clear to everyone that she didn't just know who Led Zeppelin were, but felt their magic...
Heart
Anne Wilson sang "Black Dog" on a regular basis throughout her career! There are so many versions of this classic performed by Heart that it was quite difficult to choose the best one... And yet - here is our choice:
And here's another gorgeous version performed with the band Gov't Mule:
It sounds incredible - Wilson's vocals can only be described as "fiery, passionate, burning"!
Beth Hart
For years now. Beth Hart remains one of rock 'n' roll's most talented singers. As, in fact, one of the most undervalued in this business.
In 2021, the performer released the "furious" (as critics described it) Led Zeppelin cover album. Among the powerfully bold interpretations was "Black Dog," which we couldn't help but include on our list.
Ito Kurdhi feat Marina Sidik
There's always room for jazz version! Such interpretations sound not only cool but also very original.
This cover is beautiful! And the singer's vocals are very much in tune with the killer rock'n'roll....
Tony Levin
Tony Levin is considered one of the greatest bassists in the history of classic rock! And his version of "Black Dog" is a gift for all those who are fascinated by his mastery.
He doesn't just play individual notes, he does it harmoniously. You have to agree: it's not easy to learn. Perhaps it should already be in the blood.....
