"The Royal Guitar Genius: Brian May and his best solos

"I don't think my technique as a guitarist has changed much over the years. What has really changed is the experience of implementing ideas.

Brian May's Best Guitar Solos by Fuzz Music Magazine

Brian May - perhaps the only guitar hero with a Ph.D. in astrophysics. The world loved him for his virtuosity and skill, but also because for many years he was part of the Queen - of a group that has never been equaled! Despite his brilliant mind and rabid fame, May remains a simple man, even quite humble. But what he's really not modest about is his playing. His solo - is a separate art form. Brian himself said the following about it:

"Well, in my opinion, the best solo is a melody that is as sensual and emotional as the vocalist's performance. She sings, but only without the words..."

And we can't argue with that. Many great May's solo not only complemented, but dramatically transformed the songs in which they appeared. And today we decided to remember the best of the best! Our selection will be accompanied by reflections of the guitarist himself, so we're sure it won't be boring.

«Bohemian Rhapsody»

There was probably no doubt in anyone's mind that "Bohemian Rhapsody" will make our list. Here May contributed not only a wonderful, timeless solo, but also some of the most brilliant guitar texturesThe band's performance, especially Freddie Mercury's vocals, is complementary to that of the rest of the band.

"The guitar can be a voice on its own, indisputably. But it should always sound underneath the vocals. Be free and creative, but always remember that if you're doing something that messes up the vocals, you're on the wrong playing field..."

"Keep Yourself Alive

Pearl Queen's debut album, "Keep Yourself Alive is endowed with a wonderful solo: May doesn't just sound dignified, he shines!

It's not just the solo that's beautiful in this track, it's the riff. The sound is special, recognizable, confident... Undoubtedly: for a debut this is more than an eloquent statement about oneself as a guitarist to the world.

"Killer Queen."

Few people know, but the solos from "Killer Queen." - a favorite for May himself! And there are good reasons for that - not only the interesting sound.

It's a great song with elements of Cabaretbut it's also proof that Brian can shine not only in hard rock, but in other areas as well. His magnificent three-part solo was recorded after the other members had contributed. At the time the track was recorded, May was illBut Freddie left room for his comrade and his guitar improvisation, which he never regretted: the result is more than impressive. By the way: this is one of the band's strongest compositions, in which Mercury is especially beautiful and confident.

"Crazy Little Thing Called Love"

This track "with a touch of rock 'n' roll" (as critics described it) was the first American number one single for Queen. The song is also unique in that it serves as a beautiful tribute to Elvis Presley and rockabilly in general. And May (since Freddie played the role of the King) briefly reincarnated himself as Scotty Moore, demonstrating his versatility as a guitarist.

For this song, Freddie turned to acoustic guitarand together with May they created some real string magic!

"Was It All Worth It"

For the solos from this track, Brian also indifferent - as well as to the composition itself:

"This song has a killer solo. I really like those rising lines. I love the lines that suggest harmonic content. Everything is perfect here!"

Speaking of himself, these days, the legend emphasized:

"I don't think my technique as a guitarist has changed much over the years. What has really changed is the experience of implementing ideas.

"Tie Your Mother Down."

A classy composition written by May on Spanish guitar.

"Tie Your Mother Down." has become one of the staples of the Queen's live repertoire, and the solo played no small part in that.

"Now I'm Here"

One of the most brilliant moments in May's guitar career, the track "Now I'm Here" is full of chic riffs and solos, which many critics saw as a tribute to Chuck Berry.

The sound can be described as "Plain and simple."but it is also very rich, harmonious and original.

"Stone Cold Crazy."

This track, which lasts a little over two minutes, best demonstrates to us the essence of the band itself - what the band has always been Queen.

May captured the mood of the composition perfectly, and gave it powerful explosive playwhich in turn gives the listener unbridled energy!

"Brighton Rock."

Here the guitarist used his entire arsenal of techniques, full of echoes and "delays. As a result, "Brighton Rock" can safely be considered quintessential his style.

"I will never claim to be a great guitarist in the virtuoso sense. I just try to play from my heart," Brian May once said.
