Released on 17 September 2020, "Chasing The Golden Hour, Pt. 3" has already managed to blow the minds of today's music lovers! This mixtape marks a departure from the heavier sounds of dubstep, mesmerising with a palette of hues that evoke the ultimate summer relaxation....
Who's GRiZ?
Grant Richard Kwizinski was born and raised in Southfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. The guy is famous for playing saxophone and also producing funk/electro-soul and self-proclaimed future funk! Kwizinski was first introduced to the alto saxophone and piano back in primary school... Since then, his life has been inextricably linked to music.....
Since 2011 GRiZ (our hero's alias) has been releasing an absolutely insane amount of music! With 8 studio albums under his belt, a collaboration with Wreckno (18 tracks in total) and a huge amount of singles - today he revives his Chasing The Golden Hour series, the story of which started back in 2015...
Every Christmas in Detroit, GRiZ plays charity shows.
Unique fact, but every year our hero makes a pilgrimage to Thailand! In fact - on "Know Time Like The Present", the opening track from the latest release Chasing the Golden Hour Pt. 3, Kwizinski goes very deep into this subject, saying "I stopped trying... The universe is just being - that's the answer".....
Now let's get to the fun part... CTGH Pt. 3!
"Chasing The Golden Hour, Pt. 3" will serve as the perfect musical appetiser, with shades of summer gone by... As summer sunsets into autumn, electro-funk connoisseurs chase the passing season with warm melodies and cosy harmonies for a nostalgic project. The record is filled with upbeat rhythms that evoke a sense of optimism! Especially from our Michigan native, who curates a canvas that showcases his sonic maturity and artistic versatility...
CTGH Pt. 3 incorporates a variety of sounds and styles, showcasing GRiZ's top-notch production and musical knowledge. The poignant dialogue in "Know Time Like The Present", the more upbeat post-disco style musicianship of "Nights in Shibuya", or maybe you prefer the Californian soul of "Won't Be Gone Long" - this mixtape covers many musical bases and seems to have something meaningful and appealing for everyone.
"I wanted to recreate the carefree pleasant atmosphere you feel when the perfect summer evening is approaching sunset and everything around you has the most beautiful shimmering shade of gold," GRiZ said in a press release. "Chasing The Golden Hour is a magical moment, it's a cool breeze on your back, it's sweet summer fun in musical form..."
"Chasing The Golden Hour, Pt. 3" is not the dharma of an enlightened buddha, but rather an unearthed journey... It's a jazzy, groove-infused compilation of instrumental musings and creative freedom, more laid-back than its predecessors, exploding in rainbow rhythms!
"When I did the first two mixtapes, I was literally 'shooting footage in the dark'," he says. "It was a mishmash of songs with a softer mood and then everything went overboard... I wanted to focus, dig a little deeper and have a more thoughtful approach to finishing those songs. That's why the third part has the softer rules... It's more crisp, more sustained and much more harmonious..."
Inspired by the cohesive flow of melodies and rhythms, Kwizinski forced himself to find the right atmosphere and stick only to it. He wanted to make a mixtape that would soundtrack a scooter ride through the evening streets of Pai, a sleepy Thai town where the producer slipped away in early 2020.
The tracks, the music design, the...
The mixtape's lead single, "Sweet", serves as the pinnacle of all this magic, with its modern funk groove and signature saxophone motifs leading into the meditative album-ending "Floating" and "Where Will I Go"...
GRiZ on the single: "This song kind of came into my head at the time when I first thought of doing all this. I've been playing saxophone a lot lately, but it would have been too easy to copy it... Some other ingredient was needed, and I found it..."
The fuzzy sunset sounds generated by experimentation culminate in the secret track "Wish". The rest of the mixtape is completely fresh, previously unreleased music, the sounds of pure GRiZ bliss... Just like "Nights In Shibuya" (Japan) or "Koh Samui" (Thailand)....
"I produce from the heart," says Grant. "These songs are a reflection of my personal practice."
Conclusion...
Staying true to the "Chasing The Golden Hour" series, the album embodies a minimalistic yet reckless sound - a stark departure from the musician's dubstep-infused releases from his past collections. "Chasing The Golden Hour" (Pt. 3) showcases the talented producer's versatility in the production space and his ability to create his own stylistic directions.
GRiZ declares: this mixtape is a reflection of his self-awareness and his deep connection to the universe, as well as a return to a form that showcases his deep knowledge of classical recordings, funk instrumentals and poetic lyrics... All the while staying true to the minimalistic yet so intoxicating CTGH Pt... series of sounds.
