Deraps: history, songs and clips, interesting facts, similarities with Van Halen
Deraps - A band that evokes nostalgia for powerful classic rock. Founded completely accidentallyIt has already managed to attract the attention of a wide audience! And all thanks to its phenomenal sound - driving, dynamic and very reminiscent of Van Halen.
If you are an admirer of rock classics - it is quite possible that Deraps will find a place in your heart. We suggest you get acquainted with the history of the young band, which became something like Greta Van Fleet, which, in turn, is constantly compared with Led Zeppelin.
A little background: how the band was formed
Are Deraps for Van Halen what Greta Van Fleet did for Led Zeppelin? Quite possibly. Inspired by video games, one of the founders Jacob Deraps met the drummer Josh Gallagher via YouTube. Notably, their first live performance together was not "just anywhere," but on the same stage as the band. toto!
The first time Deraps and Gallagher collaborated remotelyThe Australian drummer decided to fly to the guitarist and singer's hometown in Canada in the summer of 2017. What was the first thing they did when they first met each other? Well, it's not hard to guess, given their shared passion for music. Local bar shows, festivals, and private parties beckoned them...
But more importantly, they managed to get tickets for the concert Steve Lucater and his rock bands! The evening promised to be a busy one, but in the end it exceeded their wildest dreams.
"It's kind of crazy! I still can't believe we played with Toto! They agreed, and we played 'Roseanne.' It was also the first time Josh and I played together, but it wasn't like the first time. There's a special musical connection between us..."
Comparison with Van Halen
Deraps has not even played a proper tour yet, but already at the first concerts of the guys fans quickly drew parallels between the young band and the titans Van Halen! And when their eponymous debut (which, by the way, the guys produced) was released independently)... Yes: there is almost no doubt about who influenced their style. By the way - the musicians themselves don't even try to hide it. In an interview the vocalist said:
"Van Halen has always been an obsession of mine... The sound, the guitar playing, the feel and the groove - their style is impeccable! But what we do can't be called imitation. You have to distinguish between imitation and inspiration."
Deraps unique: On the one hand, they play in the best traditions of Van Halen. But on the other hand... If you take a good look at their repertoire, you'll notice that their style has been influenced by some other maestros, such as the stars of blues-rock in the spirit of Stephen Ray Vaughn (his influence is clearly felt in the track "Live Fast, Die Slow). There's a touch of Metallica and Guns N' Roses. In general, the guys clearly had good "teachers".
Finally: a passion for music, inspired by video games
Jacob Deraps, the vocalist and guitarist after whom the band is named, was born in Quebec in 1997 and grew up surrounded by a wide variety of musical genres. His father played guitar in local bars, while his mother played jazz saxophone, classical piano and bass. But they didn't influence his desire to get involved in the music industry (although there was some parental input as well). As strange as it may sound, it was video games inspired the guy to pick up a guitar.
Aged 11 years. he was with his parents at the mall when he saw a red V-shaped guitar. At that moment, Jacob thought it was "just like the one I saw in my favorite game. He begged his parents to buy him this instrument. And, luckily, they compromised with an alternative model, which Deraps eventually in love. As he later recalled himself:
"A lot of the games I played had a lot of seventies and eighties songs, and I just loved that music, so when I picked up a real guitar, I knew I wanted to play!"
In 16 years he dropped out of school to focus on music, working shifts in a factory and moonlighting on the side. He went headlong into making videos for YouTube and even ended up onstage with the American guitarist By Dwizil Zappabefore he met Gallagher and formed Deraps in 2017. To date, their performances have been limited, largely by the long, harsh winters of Quebec. But the guys have plans for a European tour.
"We want to tour, we're ready for it. And I want to be in an environment where I can worry about nothing else and make music all the time..."
