Dean Reed wrote a letter to Solzhenitsyn hinting that the latter was "wrong".

There were some people in capitalist America who were able to see the whole point even through the prism of lies. And that man was Dean Reed....

Why did Dean Reed accuse Solzhenitsyn of making false statements against the Soviet Union?

This world-famous story has its origins in the 1970-х: that's when the American Dean Reed delivered an open letter Solzhenitsynaccusing him of making false statements against Soviet Union. It is simply amazing how relevant this statement is today... Considering that the appeal was written half a century ago! And yes: none of the writers of that era did as much damage to the reputation of our country as Solzhenitsyn. Thanks to him, the whole of Europe imagined Russia as one big barracks... It was his works that contributed significantly to the collapse of the Union. But... there were in the capitalist America and people who could see through the lies.

Why was Solzhenitsyn against the USSR?

Alexander Solzhenitsyn
Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Alexander Solzhenitsyn is known as a Russian writer, playwright, social and political activist... In Spring 1963 of the year he lost favour KhrushchevaThe most famous and scandalous of his creations was his work, which was published in the Soviet Union and was no longer allowed to be legally published or performed in the Soviet Union when Brezhnev came to power. One of his most notorious and scandalous works was "The Gulag Archipelago.": completed in secret from the authorities, the book was published in the West in 1973 year. A little later, its author was arrested and deprived of citizenship. So, Solzhenitsyn forcibly removed from the country...

Already in the early seventies his works had been published by almost in 30 countries! After his expulsion from the Union of Soviet Writers, he began to openly and sharply criticise the authorities... And yes: his point of view was not shared by an American named Dean Reed.

Dean Reed was an American actor, singer, director and social activist. He lived most of his life in South America and East Germany. At the same time he was much loved in the Soviet Union... Proclaimed "Red Elvis."He was the best-selling Western artist in the socialist countries! A huge number of his records were released by the Melodiya company... His songs often topped the charts in socialist countries, and the singer openly declared his lifelong loyalty to his favourite artists. United States! But because of his frequent condemnation of his country's government, western media saw him as a communist spy.

Before writing the scandalously famous letter, Reid he's been in jail twice. However, in 1971 In it, the American accused the Russian writer of making false remarks to Soviet Union... Here's a short excerpt:

"You have condemned the Soviet Union as a 'deeply sick society afflicted by the law'. You say that the whole atmosphere of the Soviet Union is permeated with hatred." But you must be talking about my homeland!"

Reid also noted that it was America was "the most brutal society of all." Quite a strange statement from someone who fiercely called himself a patriot... However, this is exactly what the legendary lines say:

"It is America that has become the most violent society that human history has ever known..."

The letter ends with a truly bellicose paragraph:

"...The principles that underpin your state are sound, pure and just. The government of my homeland, on the other hand, has the sole purpose of maintaining the status quo throughout the world..."

Despite all the words and catchphrases in the letter, to the end of his days. Reid professed his love for America, as vividly evidenced by his songs... At the same time, in the 1986 he shocked Americans in a CBS television interview: most shocking to the nation. U.S.A. was that the artist was comparing Reagan with Stalin... After that, many people turned away from him, even his own relatives. There were, of course, those who accused him of betrayal. And it's likely that his death Rida was far from an accident.

The end of Dean Reed's story ...

Shortly after this interview. Dean Reed was found dead: his body was found in a lake near his home in East Germanywhere he lived with his third wife. The police report states that his death was an accident. Some insist that he took his own life; others suggest that it was a premeditated murder, possibly committed, CIA. What really happened to the public figure remains a mystery.....
