She was also one of the most famous British performers. In addition, it was O'Riordan who wrote their strongest and most successful songs for the group ... She and The Cranberries were at the peak of their fame: they sold tens of millions of albums around the world, and nothing seemed to interfere with their success! But… In 2018, the heart of the band, the incomparable Dolores, died…

“In fact, I hide a lot of secrets regarding my childhood…” - few people know, but from eight to 12 years old, Dolores was abused by loved ones… It is for this reason that she spent most of her adult life in search of balance between depression and anorexia...

Young Dolores O'Riordan

Dolores O'Riordan was born in Ballybricken, County Limerick (Ireland) in 1971. Her father was a farmer until, at the end of the 60s, he damaged his brain in an accident ... The girl's mother worked at a school. Love for music took possession of little Dolores: she sang with great pleasure from an early, early age! But ... the childhood of the future star was by no means bright and colorful ...

When Dolores was 7 years old, their house burned down. But this turned out to be not the worst thing that the girl had to endure ... From eight to 12 years old, Dolores was subjected to violence by a man whom she sincerely believed ... And from the age of ten, that is, as a child, she already performed in pubs ...

Already at school, Dolores was a real rock star! On the first day, she climbed into a chair and declared that when she grew up, she would definitely become a rock star (while Dolores sang “Tra la la la la, Triangles”)! All the years that she studied at school, Dolores studied piano at the same time, and later on the guitar.

As the singer herself recalled, her schedule as a teenager was very, very strict ... And it really was. In addition to studying and music, Dolores had household obligations and ... the church. O'Riordan's parents were Catholics: her mother repeatedly insisted that Dolores become a nun, or become a music teacher ... The girl herself had completely different plans regarding her life. So, it's not surprising that Dolores ran away from home as soon as she turned 18, no. She later says:

“... I left home because I loved to sing and wanted to connect my life with music. I didn’t want to go to college, I didn’t want to become a nun… I lived with my boyfriend for about two years, and all this time I was a beggar: there were days when I was so hungry that I was ready to die for a bag of chips… It was during this period In my life, I met The Cranberries, for which I am very grateful ... "

The Cranberries' rapid ascent exacerbated O'Riordan's mental disturbances, namely "terrible self-loathing". First anorexia, then a breakdown ... In 2013, after a tragic incident that almost took Dolores from the world, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The singer also had problems with the law: she was arrested for disorderly behavior during a transatlantic flight in 2014. During the detention, Dolores shouted: “I am an icon! I am the Queen of Limerick!" Later, the court acknowledges that at the time of the incident she was suffering from a mental disorder ...

She was equally passionate about rock and Gaelic folk, her voice was striking and steely and matched unusually well with the band's melodiousness. Her flamboyant look, with spiky hair and Martens boots, provided a visual anchor, completely eclipsing the rest of the band... Although out of step with the prevailing Britpop and grunge scenes, they were taken over by former Smiths manager Jeff Travis . The defining moment came when the successful Island label booked them as the opening act on the fast-growing band Suede's US tour in 1993. Suede's miserable ambiguity didn't please the US, but the Cranberries came home a star... Their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? And 1994's 17 million-selling follow-up, No Need to Argue, made O'Riordan so famous that, to her chagrin, she couldn't leave her hotel. Simply because he was surrounded by a crowd of distraught fans! "Linger" and the follow-up single "Zombie", written in response to the 1993 IRA bombing of Warrington, were ubiquitous on MTV! It was a resounding success...

Despite the fact that she had a metal rod inserted in her leg in 1994, Dolores was contractually forced to tour for the entire year... Therefore, she played some shows in a wheelchair! The same year, she married Don Burton, then Duran Duran's tour manager. By the way: their three children became O'Riordan's salvation... It was thanks to them that the singer abandoned any attempts to hasten her departure to another world, when the latter, fortunately, failed in 2013...

After the breakup of the Cranberries in 2003, O'Riordan embarked on a hectic solo career that resulted in two albums: Are You Listening? (2007) and No Baggage (2009). In addition, she worked with Smiths bassist Andy Rourke on the DARK project and was a judge on one season of the Irish version of the TV show The Voice. Still respected by other musicians, Dolores appeared on the recordings of Zucchero and Jam & Spoon ... In 2017, shortly before her death, O'Riordan said that her goal was to record at least one more album and go on tour again:

“I haven’t done too much in the last five years… You know, it’s normal: sometimes you have periods when you don’t write music, but just go about your personal life!”

One of the brightest rock stars of the British scene was gone in the winter of 2018 ... After the New Year, Dolores returned to London to work on several musical projects. The singer stayed at the Hilton on Park Lane. The next morning, she was found dead ... Before that, Dolores managed to say goodbye to her mother, calling her for the last time ...

The cause of the rock star's death remained a mystery for a long time. As a result, it became known that Dolores O'Riordan drowned in the bath, which she took while under the influence of sedatives and alcohol.

Bright memory…

Dolores O'Riordan has been called "one of the brightest voices in the history of pop and alternative rock music"! And to this day, she remains an icon of a whole era ... As many critics emphasize, it was thanks to O'Riordan that the ship The Cranberries reached such heights! While other rock singers sounded aloof and mundane, Dolores was an innovator! This woman became a "true pioneer" for future generations...
