Stages in the life and work of rock star Doro Pesch!

Doro Pesch is a German-born heavy metal star and ex-Warlock frontwoman. It’s not for nothing that Pesh bears the title of “Queen of Metal”, because her contribution to metal culture is invaluable! Today she is a cult figure in the world of music, and her dazzling career spans almost four decades! Doro started her journey with the garage bands of her native Düsseldorf! Real success came to her in the early 80s, as part of Warlock. The most interesting thing is that Pesh managed to maintain her reputation in her homeland, despite the fact that she lived and produced her albums in America. Today the star's discography includes 17 studio albums!

Early years

Doro Pesch rocks the stage...

Doro Pesch was born in the summer of 1964 in West Germany, in Düsseldorf, a city where great bands of other genres such as Kraftwerk or Die Toten Hosen were formed ... As the star herself said, her first acquaintance with music happened at the age of 3, during in many ways - thanks to the influence of the great Little Richard, the pioneer of rock music ... By the age of ten, Doro played the piano perfectly! It was around this time that she began to show her first musical influences. Bands like Slade or T-Rex were the ones whose records she "listened to the holes" ...

And although she grew up in a German-speaking country, she began to speak English fluently as a child. This allowed her to perform most of her songs in that language. This fact also brings her closer to other German bands such as Scorpions or Accept. At the age of 16, after a dangerous form of tuberculosis, Pesh decided to devote herself entirely to music, in particular singing. In parallel, she studied graphic design. In the same period, Doro begins his creative path ...

The first steps on the path to glory ...

In the early 80s, Doro was accepted into her first band called Snakebite. Rehearsals were held in basements, which, in fact, was the norm for most underground bands. After the breakup of Snakebite, Pesh continued to sing: she worked with Beast and Attack before the world knew about Warlock...

Success with Warlock!

Doro Pesch in his youth ...

The history of Warlock dates back to 1982: this melodic fantasy metal band captivated the audience in an instant, thanks in large part to Pesh... At that time, the metal scene was dominated exclusively (well, almost) by men, which is why and a charismatic person like Doro had a tremendous effect on the media and listeners! This was an exception in the 80's metal scene... So Warlock opened the door to the idea that women could sing aggressive rock, and it was something phenomenal! And if before them the public knew such bands as Girlschool or The Runaways, then Pesh became something new, special ... She became an innovator, a woman singing about witches, demons, sorcerers ... It was then, without a shadow of a doubt, that the girl from Dusseldorf turned into a heavy metal icon...

Warlock released several albums before, in August 1986, Doro became the first woman to perform with a metal band at the Monsters of Rock festival in Castle Donington! Soon she gave up graphic design and devoted herself entirely to the stage, touring, music ... But, unfortunately, the group broke up. Triumph and Agony was their last and most successful album (it went gold in Germany!) The release featured major Warlock hits, including "All We Are" and "Für immer"...

Together with Warlock, Doro recorded four studio albums, until in 1988 she became the only remaining official member of the first line-up. This paved the way for showing off her confidence and ability, which is reflected in the album Force Majeure (this time it will be released under her name...) This time, Pesch has moved away from the gothic fantasy metal style and embraced a more pop metal/hard rock sound. which led to great success in the European market in the early 1990s. By the way: in the same period, metalheads began to suffer from the rise of grunge, when bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam blew up the scene ... So, alternative rock became the main direction of rock. With the advent of the new decade, the 80s went out of fashion in an instant, and with them the hard rock / metal genres ... Representatives of these genres began to be considered part of the old school of metal / rock, and this fate did not bypass Doro Pesch ... However, she turned out to be very strong and courageous woman! Despite the commercial downturn, Pesch never stopped recording. In return, her fans remained loyal to her... And she appreciated that.

In the 90s, Doro experimented a lot with a new direction. These experiments resulted in several albums, including Angels Never Die (1983). The work consisted of melodic hard rock songs and power ballads. The highlight of the release was the track "Bad Blood", the video for which made a big splash!

Pesch herself repeatedly recalled this period as the most difficult in her career:

“Machine II Machine didn’t do well and it was very difficult to control myself, it was difficult to continue… Sometimes I was forced to sing at weddings and private parties…”

Released in 1998, Love Me in Black was also unsuccessful. Moreover: WEA considered the album unsuitable for the US market, which is why it was released only in the homeland of Pesh ... The popularity of the "Queen of Metal" in the United States began to gain momentum only by the beginning of the new century ...

For Doro, the 2000s began with the release of the album Calling the Wild, which contained the tracks "Love Me Forever" and "Alone Again", recorded together with Lemmy, the leader of Motörhead. This collaboration started a tradition that Pesch continues to this day: duets!

Actually, at the beginning of the 2000s, metalheads gradually began to return to fashion, which allowed Pesh to feel like a queen again, not only in Europe, but also in the West! Together with her group Doro, the artist began to actively tour around the world ... At the same time, new albums were recorded and released, for example, the album Fight! The undoubted hit from him was the song "Fight" ...

In 2003, in Düsseldorf, Pesch gave an unforgettable concert in honor of the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Warlock! As she herself recalled:

“For me, it was a very, very important holiday ... At first, we were sure that there would be ... three thousand people at the concert, no more. But they turned out to be twice as many! People came from all over the world: from Spain, America, Germany… And it was very cool!”
