The story of one performance: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant - the last time on the same stage

Led Zeppelin - a cult group in the history of rock, which had a huge impact on both their contemporaries and many followers and even modern performers! They broke into the music arena at the end 60s years, and already in the second half 70s were real icons... All four members were masters of their craft, but the group in particular was glorified Jimmy Page and Robert Plant: virtuoso guitarist and blond "God of Rock" with ethereal vocals - these two seemed to be ahead of their time, and their creative union seemed to be made in heaven ... They became idols, and after Zeppelin they continued to create gorgeous music ... And there is one curious story when these two performed together for the last time on one scene...

When the guitar virtuoso Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin in 1968 year, he struggled to put together a new band after The Yardbirds broke up ... Initially, this new group was called The New Yardbirds, and was intended only to fulfill contractual obligations at the end of the tour, however - its huge potential was visible to the naked eye. It didn't take great critics to realize that these guys from the UK have a big future going far beyond the local scene...

Page along with the original Yardbirds including Eric Clapton, were the main players in the London sessions at the time! And being interested in creating a new version of The Yardbirds, Jimmy wanted some kind of supergroup with Jeff Beck, Keith Moon and John Entwistle. Of course Led Zeppelin would look and sound very different if she really evolved along with this line-up. But everything happened as it happened ... And, most likely, for the better! As it turns out, this particular roster of musicians will not be available, and instead less experienced but no less virtuoso musicians will join Page's ranks, namely John Bonham and John Paul Jones. But there was one last piece of the puzzle: they needed a vocalist...

Momentarily considered for this position Terry Reedwhen Page invited him to sing for the band. But Reed, however, had other plans - he was supposed to go on tour with Rolling Stones across America. However, he recommended Robert Plante, and even personally introduced the brilliant singer to Jimmy. Page was instantly enamored with Plant's abilities and was completely taken aback by the fact that he hadn't hit it off yet! Thus was born the legendary Led Zeppelin...

New Yardbirds completed the tour and went into a studio financed entirely by Page, leaving them independent of any label's bureaucracy. This culminated in the eponymous debut Zeppelin in 1969 year! The record was a huge success, which gave the band the opportunity to make themselves known: potential labels were literally "breaking in their doors ..." But as it happens in life, black stripes are replaced by white ones: after a long series of successful recordings that pioneered the early examples of hard rock and metal , in 1980 drummer John Bonham passed away, and the band had to think about their future...

While Page led Zeppelin to early success with their innovative songwriting, the band eventually developed into a close-knit collective in regards to writing their material, in particular the rhythm section between Bonham's drumming and Page's rhythm playing. Therefore, it is not surprising that after death Bonham Zep were hesitant to continue... However, they reunited several times.

History of reunions

The group did reunite several times. Their first reunion took place in 1981 the year the group was formed The Honeydrippers, which included Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The Honeydrippers had a different musical vision, which likely offset the risk of continuing Zeppelin without Bonham. This group has only released one album.

The next two reunions will take place first in 1985 year, when all three surviving members will unite with Phil Collins, Tony Thompson and Paul Martinez. IN 1988 year the group reunited again, but this time with their son John Bonham, Jasonplaying drums. That being said, the members of Led came to the conclusion that both reunions were very disjointed and unsatisfying...

In 2007, this composition appeared again with Jason Bonham on drums: the show was called Celebration Day at London's O2 Arena. Unbeknownst to them at the time, this was the last time Page and Plant would perform together on the same stage. There were plans to tour after this performance, but Plant had other ideas...

Jimmy Page's opinion

In an interview with NME Page expressed dissatisfaction with Plant's ambiguity. According to the guitarist, in a minute Plante agreed, and another minute later he said that he was too busy with his solo project ...

“Last year, Robert [Plant] said he wasn't doing anything in 2014 and asked what the other two guys thought? Well, he knows what the other guys are thinking…,” Page said. “Everyone would like to play more shows for the band. He just plays games and I'm sick of it, to be honest… I don't sing, so I can't help it…”

In its turn Plante put forward his own version of events:

“I told them I was busy and they would just have to wait,” he recalled in 2014. “Eventually, I would come to my senses… But what’s even more discouraging is that Jimmy used it against me…”
