All about Harry Styles' Fine Line album: idea, meaning, background, tracks

Fine Line - the title of the second studio album Harry Stylesex-member of a mega-popular boy band. One Direction! The record was released in December 2019 on the labels Columbia and Erskine Records. "Thin Line." Stiles explores themes such as breakups, happiness and sadness, sexual attraction... Critics have described this record as "pop-rock with elements of prog-pop, psychedelic pop, folk, soul, funk and indie-pop!" Simply put - Fine Line has a really interesting sound, noticeably different from Harry's 2017 solo debut. 6 singles have been released (which include. "Watermelon Sugar." and opening "Golden.") before the record debuted at number one on the Billboard 200! Fine Line subsequently went platinum twice in the United States! A year later, the influential music publication Rolling Stone placed this album at number 491 on its list "500 Greatest Albums of All Time.". The sound, lyrics and, in fact, the idea behind "The Thin Line" will be discussed below.....

Background and prerequisites

It would seem that Harry Styles hiding inside a mystical pop-rock record... Fine Line keeps the listener at a fair distance from his idol, not allowing one to fully understand who Styles really is....

"You should go into the water a little deeper than you are used to normally... Step back a little from your depth. When you don't feel that your feet are almost touching the bottom, you are just in the right place to do something truly exciting!"

According to Stiles, "The Thin Line." represents an amalgamation of themes about "love, sadness and sexual attraction..." The singer also noted that in Fine Line included his "most complex, most heartfelt songs he ever wrote..." The main aim Harry (from his own words) was to make his second album lighter and more adventurous than his eponymous debut! And he seems to have succeeded.....

Remarkably, much of the material for Fine Line was written by Harry when he was under the impression that he had broken up with the model Camille Rowe... Noticing the singer's decadent mood, the producer Kid Harpoon urged Stiles to take control of himself and pour his soul into his songs... So Harry did. At the time, he was looking for inspiration in the artwork David Bowie, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell. And others...

Sound

Sound Fine Line can be characterised as "the cry of an artist plunging into the abyss...". In Stiles' own words, this is his record of freedom! The album fully satisfies his musical and psychedelic whims... And, in fact, it's pretty great! It's worth noting that in terms of its sound, "Thin Line" is quite far from the One Direction (which can't be said for Harry's debut album...).

Fine Line's unique sound is delightful and compels you to listen to the record to the end, especially as most of the songs on it have at least one great moment to hold on to! The marvellous harmonies of the opening track "Golden.", synthesiser waves throughout "Sunflower, Vol. 6 "the strange and tantalising chorus to the "Lights Up." - these are just a few prime examples of Fine Line magic....

The album was recorded with the participation of truly talented musicians such as: songwriters Kid Harpoon and Jeff Basker, producer and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Johnson, guitarist Mitch Rowland and others. One big and friendly team they created a striking, very lively retro sound - without the now fashionable labels of producer and pseudo-aesthetics, which are so eager to blow up the charts and then disappear into oblivion....

As mentioned above, Fine Line is about a romantic breakup Harry Styles and beauties Camille Rowe... On his second album, the singer flawlessly conveys their romance in the brightest shades: friendship, affection, memories, attraction ... In his ballads Harry sings about his difficult character, his desires and fears ... Despite the fact that the artist to some extent allows you to get closer to the real him, it is still difficult for the listener to understand him one hundred per cent ... True Styles remains a mystery.

Critical acclaim and success

Album Fine Line was warmly received by critics! It debuted in the UK at number three, and as of March 2021 has sold a total of over a 400 000 copies (only in the singer's home country!)

Before you start recording Fine Line, Harry Styles admitted that he was afraid to pursue music after he was One Direction - supposedly every time he goes into the studio, he can't wait to create a radio single! However... "Thin Line." shows that all his fears were nothing more than fiction! This sun-warmed acoustic rock with a folk touch, accompanied by top-notch musicians, is truly refreshing....
