The Red Hot Chili Peppers' song bank is full of world-famous hits! But it was "Give It Away" that was played at the concerts of the American band as many as 948 times! And this is only according to approximate calculations....
Today we offer a look back at the story behind the making of this hit!
History of Creation
Interestingly enough, "Give It Away" was written a year before its release! The track was written by John and Flea. At that time the guys were playing in H.A.T.E, and had a couple of live performances of "Give It Away" before leaving the project.
John and Flea offered their creation to Anthony Kiedis. And then the most interesting thing happened... Long before that Kiedis had composed the phrase "give it away now", but had no idea where to put it. And now, the future hit "Give It Away" was the perfect solution to the problem....
Anthony Kiedis: "I was enthralled... I was especially enthralled by Flea's bass part... It was unbelievable! I jumped up and went to the microphone as if mesmerised, taking my notebook with me. I remembered the phrase "give it away now" and started humming it. Ohhhh... It was magical!"
Significance...
One could say that the RHCP leader was inspired by rock singer Nina Hagen. For a while, she and Kiedis had an affair, which, a dozen years later, led the musician to think about genuine concern for people....
Anthony Kiedis: "Nina was very wise... She always understood my young carelessness and inexperience... And she always helped me with her really valuable advice. Without moralising, as so many people do!"
There's a very interesting story about Anthony, Nina and the wardrobe. According to the legend, one day Kiedis looked into Hagen's wardrobe and was quite fascinated by one of her jackets... Nina immediately insisted that Kiedis keep it!
Anthony Kiedis: "Nina made me rethink some of my views on life... If you give a lot, you get a lot... So why not give it all away?"
Recording, release and achievements!
The song was recorded in the spring of 1991 at a studio in Los Angeles. Fli later recalled:
"There were practically no righting. And that's very rare! We just stuck to John's (meaning the band's guitarist, John Frusciante) philosophy: he played once, and if someone didn't like something, he played it again - completely different. That's the secret!"
"Give It Away" saw the light of day in the autumn of that year, as the lead single from Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The track topped the Billboard US Alternative Airplay chart, and was also included in a number of prestigious lists, including "500 Songs That Shaped Rock 'n' Roll"!
Music video
The band couldn't decide on the director of the clip for a long time... The guys wanted something more refined and aesthetic than what the others had shot for MTV. In the end the choice fell on the French director and photographer Stéphane Sednaoui, whose work won the heart of Kidis....
