It is something phenomenal, an influence inspired by her Cuban roots. Despite being spoken of as an American performer, above all, in her heart Gloria has always remained true to her roots.

Today she is a world-class star: more than 100 million records sold, five Grammy awards, a huge number of fans from different countries... Estefan continues to look at life with positivity, with a spark in her eyes! But few people know that behind the shoulders of this woman... a lot of hardship and tragedy.

"From Cuba to Miami" - the singer's crazy childhood years

Gloria was born in Havana, Cubain 1957. However, as a 16-month-old baby, she moved with her family to Miami in search of a better life: her homeland was going through a communist revolution, and it was not safe to stay there (given that the future singer's father was a bodyguard for the wife of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista).

Alas, the U.S. did not give the family a "fairytale life": the father served in Vietnam for several years, and on his return he was diagnosed with a multiple sclerosis. While her mother worked without weekends to provide for the family, the household chores fell on the shoulders of the very young Gloria. Instead of going out with her friends and going on dates, she took care of her father and little sister.

"I had no personal life and I felt how much responsibility was on me. It was hard, but music became my salvation..."

According to Estefan, only singing helped her get free.

"I was refusing to cry - I wasn't going to sit and cry. I would lock myself in a room and sing. That way, I would vent my emotions and find harmony."

And not only within the confines of the house, but also on stage. It all started when Gloria joined Emilio's band Miami Sound Machine as a soloist in 1975. It turned out to be a success, and already 3 years later the couple got married. But it wasn't that simple...

Estefan was a little overweight and very shy when she joined the band (in her own words). But she worked hard and persevered worked on myself: she followed a strict exercise programme, watched her diet, and overcame herself every time she went on stage. Emilio was always there to support her, for which she is very grateful.

A turning point, or a ghastly accident

When the couple had their first child, Emilio took over. paternal responsibilities. Gloria was at the height of her popularity, and she couldn't leave the stage.
