GusGus - Higher ft. VÖK (2020)

On October 30, 2020, GusGus released a new single "Higher", which was created in collaboration with the vocalist from another Icelandic band - VÖK. This collaboration is a stylistic return to the origins of a formation filled with synth sounds of vocal electronics.

GusGus wakes up from summer sleep...

Over the past year, GusGus fans have had little to celebrate. Yes, of course, there was a CD with remixes of tracks from the last full-length album “Lies are more flexible”…

... And there was also one single - "Out of Place", which was like a throwback from the old album.

About the composition "Higher" (2020)

Higher was created in collaboration with the vocalist from VÖK, who is also from Iceland. Usually Margrethe Ran Magnusdottir works in a more "fabulous" style - in pop music, but the singer has a lot in common with electronics. She fit perfectly into the dance aesthetic of the Higher (2020) number she was invited to.

The nearly four-minute musical journey of beginning begins immediately with a hypnotically mesmerizing bass drum that effortlessly builds tension with every second. The track showcases what GusGus does best - it seduces the listener with a gripping beat and delivers grandiose, unapologetic melodies.

Glitchy, poignant synths are quickly entering the sonic space with Iceland's beloved female voice taking refuge in mind-expanding soundscapes. The lyrics explore the motifs of loneliness, greed and human manipulation and advance their message against the backdrop of new, ecstatic sonic realms. Cerebrally atmospheric from start to finish, slow rhythmic beats, brooding basslines, soothing repetitions and luscious melodies characterize much of the rest of this lively electronic synthpop.

Video clip

As a versatile artistic group that includes creative elements across the spectrum, a GusGus release would not be complete without a strong visual accompaniment. Directed by Arni & Kinski, creative inspiration behind many of the videos of Sigur Ros, Kiasmos and Olafur Arnalds, this stunning music video puts GusGus' new talent Margrethe Rahn in the spotlight. The band are returning to their musical home for the first time since 2000, hiring world-renowned designer Palomo Spain to create wardrobe and style. Known for its androgionist sensibility, the collaboration serves as a perfect extension of the band's boundless creative appetite and immerses haute couture into the world of GusGus.

Comparison

More attentive listeners of the band will notice that "Higher" is a bit more dynamic than the previous songs. Many fans have already missed the more dynamic, danceable and pulsating compositions of GusGus. "Lies are more flexible", for all its beauty, was a bit slower. And, of course, "Higher" (2020) cannot be compared with such works, which, for example, were in the album "24/7" (2009).

The gentle sound of GusGus will make us hear new parts of dance melodies soon, and with them any songs that we really missed!
