How was one of the biggest hits of the Time Machine group created? The history of the song "Turn"
Throughout its more than 50-year career, the legendary Russian group "Time Machine" continually endured all kinds of criticism in its address ... In the vastness of our country, it was called immoral and pessimistic, and the Soviet press accused the team of almost all mortal sins ... Colleagues in rock music did not like the group because of the alleged venality. Well-known music critics were not at all shy about talking about Andrey Makarevich's "creative impotence"...
Of course, this prevented the rock band from gaining popularity and demand both in the USSR and in the expanses of the post-Soviet space. However, there is a hit in the “Time Machine” piggy bank that many Russian listeners liked ... The encouraging composition “Turn” was included in the list of “100 Best Songs of Russian Rock of the 20th Century” according to the listeners of “Our Radio”. It is curious that the arrangement of the song has not changed much throughout its history! True, Kutikov and the rest of the group called the original version of "Turn" a "sentimental monster", which is why it was coldly rejected.
Boris Grebenshchikov shared his emotions from this song like this:
“... The only thing that makes me this song is an awkward shrug. It's not my aesthetic, but people love it. Since “Turn” is ten times more popular than all the work of “Aquarium”, there is nothing left for me to say here ... “The Machinists” have achieved the love of the people, and they are great at it!”
The Machinists themselves contradict each other every time, talking about the creation of this song ... So, for example, Kutikov claims that he wrote the melody, and Podgorodetsky helped to “harmonize” it. But in his book “The Car with the Jews”, Peter gives completely contradictory information, allegedly he composed a well-known melody when he served in the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and guarded the prisoners. In a word, the true history of the hit is shrouded in darkness...
What is really reliable information is that the original version of "Turn" resembled a ballad: the song was too slow and lyrical ... Makarevich quickly rejected the melody in the spirit of the Italian stage, after which Kutikov offered another option - much more dynamic, and not so sugary! But again: if you believe the leader of the group, then the melody was born as a result of hard rehearsals with the joint efforts of all participants.
An interesting story was later told by Andrei Makarevich, who, in fact, became the author of the text:
“...I remember the weather was great - spring, warm, sunny... I decided to take a walk in the park of culture, where I visited the Plzen restaurant. After typing beer and shrimp, I wrote as many as two texts: "Turn" and "Oh, what a moon"! This has never happened to me before…”
It took only a few months for "Povorot" to lead the most influential hit parade of "Moskovsky Komsomolets" in those years! And this is not the most surprising thing... What is much more surprising is that the song confidently held on to the position of the leader for a whole... a year and a half! This is what really deserves to be called a masterpiece of its era.
