In it, the main character wanders through the desert, drowns in his sleep, hears bells, and finds himself in an eerie yet glamorous place from which there is no way out!

In the mid-'70s. Eagles felt all the effects of the pressures of show business, fame, illegal substances, and the exhausting career of rock stars. With "Hotel California," the members wanted to capture the excesses and destructive lifestyles that had become the standard in the rock world. Their previous record. "One of These Nights." had great potential, which caused the group to be closely watched:

"Mexican Reggae."

Don Felder

Few people know, but the working title track was "Mexican Reggae.". The basis of the future hit was born in a very romantic setting: Don Felder rented a beach house in Malibu and enjoyed the ocean breeze, slowly strumming his guitar. That's pretty much how he played the big score.

"He brought a cassette and there were about half a dozen records. None of them moved me, but this one... Something in the Latin style, sounded very unusual, fresh. I decided: "This tune definitely has potential," Henley recalled.

All the participants were impressed, and gave the unusual guitar part a working title "Mexican Reggae.".

Black Sabbath themselves were left in shock

For the recording of "Hotel California," the band turned to Bill Shimchikwho had worked on their previous album. Bill was happy to reunite with the Eagles, but he had a condition: he wanted to record at Criteria Studios in Miami. We happen to be in the neighborhood. Black Sabbathwho literally tore down the studio walls with their heavy metal thunder!

The Eagles even had to re-record because of the loud noise. "The Last Resort." several times. But if Sabbath was the "loudest band," the Eagles were the most rock 'n' roll, and it wasn't about the sound anymore. From memory Geezer Butler:

"They had just vacated the studio, and when we went in there - we were practically shocked. There was about a pound of stuff in there! We had to clean everything out of the mixing desk for a long time!"

Don Felder Forgot His Own Party

When the Eagles started working on the title track, Don absolutely forgotwhat and how he played on the demo from a year ago.

"I really couldn't play that part--I just forgot it! When I started playing, Don (Henley) yelled: "No, no, stop! This isn't right!" But I couldn't even remember what it was..."

The situation was complicated by the fact that the tape was in Los Angeles. The intrepid team of rockers was forced to Improvise and take one extraordinary step.

"We had to call my housekeeper, who took the tape and played it over the phone!"

The band rejected Felder's vocals

The originally powerful "Victim of Love" was supposed to be performed by Felder himself. And he did, in fact, perform it, only his bandmates were not thrilled with Don's vocal skills.

"Despite all his talents as a guitarist, Don wasn't a singer," Fry later stressed. Henley agreed with him completely: "His performance was not up to the band's standards.

While a self-satisfied Felder expected "Victim of Love" to be on the album with his vocals, the band's manager To Irving Azoff was instructed to tell Don the unpleasant news: Henley had recorded the song with his own vocals. Don (Felder) later recalled:

"It was a bitter pill to swallow. I felt like Don took that song away from me. But it was impossible to argue about my vocals compared to Henley's."

Don Henley Still knows how to surprise people around him. For example, during the tour after the release of Hotel California He toured the States and Europe with his own mattress! From the memories of the chief electrician of the group:

"His main requirement was a huge bed and his own mattress, which the crew had to carry with them everywhere! Have you ever carried a king-sized mattress with you everywhere? It's bulky and heavy! So, the crew had to set up the drums...and his bed!"

Henley himself claims that he had his own Causes.

"I have a bad back - during concerts, when I was in an uncomfortable position, my spine would shift. In the '70s I literally couldn't sleep! That's why I exclusively prefer a special, orthopedic mattress. You know - hotel mattresses are terrible!"

All Irony is that during the tour Henley so and so did not enjoy The legend has it that he was not allowed into the hotel with his mattress.

As we noted at the beginning of this article, the title track of "Hotel California" is incredibly cinematic! And it caught the attention of the writer and film producer Julia Phillips: The woman got excited about the idea of making a movie based on the story of the song, and their first business meeting with the manager of the Eagles went off without a hitch! But soon something went wrong...

For the second meeting, which turned out to be unpleasant for all, Azoff came in the company of Henley and Fry. Phillips would later call the Eagles members "arrogant rock stars addicted to substances. But Henley completely disagreed with that assessment:

"We went to her house, and to be honest - we didn't have much desire to communicate. We were polite, but maybe not too friendly. Rather, we were cautious. She saw this, and tried to relax us by offering substances. But we declined-we were not acquainted, and the gesture made us wary, especially since we were here for a business meeting. You should have seen her face - we literally threw her off!"
