Song History: Roxette – "The Look" (1989)

The song "The Look "from Roxette's second studio album, released under the name" Look Sharp!", not only became wildly popular, instantly soaring to the top of the most prestigious music charts, but also gave the Swedish rock band real fame. Initially, neither the authors nor the producers of the song believed in its success. But luck and luck intervened, making the track an undisputed international hit.

Memories of musicians

Later, the band members often shared in interviews their memories of creating the song that made them popular. For example, Per Gessle, vocalist of Roxette, noted that the legendary text was written completely by accident:

"We wrote the first two verses on a rough draft, hoping to transform them into something really cool in the future. But, you know, we didn't come up with a good idea, so we just left it at that."

Well, such luck can only be envied!

The lead singer of the rock band, Marie Fredriksson, recalled another episode related to difficulties in recording the track:

"I couldn't hit a single note, I sounded very clumsy and unconvincing. But Per performed the song just perfectly! But in those years, he was still not so confident, he could not accept the role of a vocalist."

The musicians claimed that when working with the text, they tried to choose words and phrases that would most advantageously and successfully overlap with the rhythm, and therefore you should not look for hidden meaning in them. "The Look" is simply musical mischief, seasoned with a bit of eroticism and piquancy.

Recording a song

The song was recorded in 1988 at EMI Studios in Stockholm.

In the United States, the song was discovered thanks to the efforts of Dean Cushman – a Swedish exchange student. He just brought a recording of the track to Minneapolis radio station KDWB and asked them to put it on the air. To everyone's surprise, "The Look" made a huge impression on the audience, winning the love of an entire generation. It began to be actively rotated on various stations, and sold thousands of copies of cassettes around the country.

Later, Marie Fredriksson confessed:

"You won't believe it, but 'The Look' is still my favorite song. I think this is the best thing we've ever done!"

Roxette released remixes of the original 1988 track twice. The first time – in 1995 as part of the compilation album "Don't Bore Us, Get to the Chorus", the second-in 2015.
