Queen's success story

A bit about the most controversial and most prominent band of the 80s

Queen and Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury is the greatest artist of all time, who has left an indelible mark on the history of world music. His voice is something from another space. Something unimaginably beautiful and powerful, plunging into fantasy worlds and awakening the most secret facets of the soul... Together with the superb playing of his Queen bandmates, Mercury revealed to the world timeless masterpieces that can be listened to probably forever. Today we decided to talk about the phenomenon of the iconic Queen, and to understand why this band is so loved and remembered by millions of people, mostly far from rock'n'roll....

Most of today's listeners would do anything to plunge back into the "Quinn" era for just a little bit and get a glimpse of their late idol.... Not many bands have managed to achieve such a stunning success - to sell out records in huge numbers all over the world, to bring many thousands of hordes of spectators to frenzied ecstasy, to achieve the recognition of the most influential and demanding critics, touching their "unapproachable" hearts with their magnificent creations and lyrics... So what is the secret of Queen? Why do millions of listeners continue to admire and talk about them even today, when more than three decades have passed since the death of their main character?

Today, Queen are one of the most extraordinary bands in the world. All four members of the legendary band - Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon and Freddie Mercury himself - remained one powerful commune from the beginning to the very end of the band's existence. Surprisingly, each of them can boast one or another master's degree, or at least a bachelor's degree... So, for example, Brian May has a master's degree and a doctorate in astrophysical sciences, Freddie Mercury has a master's degree in art, John Deacon has a master's degree in electronics, Roger Taylor has a bachelor's degree in biology. Impressive, isn't it?

In addition to achievements in education, the members of the cult band distinguished themselves from other rock musicians and the fact that around them did not ignite incredible scandals, which, you must agree, a phenomenon in the music industry is very, very rare....

All four geniuses made an invaluable contribution to the band's development and its successful march to the Olympus of worldwide fame... Each of them had at least one Top 10 megahit. Each could boast of skilful skill and impeccable mastery of several musical units at once. Each strived for new discoveries and was not afraid of risky experiments...

It was Queen who managed to find that very thin, but so important line between just good music and good music that sells. Just think of their famous "We Will Rock You" and "We Are The Champions"... A terrific example of great stadium rock! And if we talk about the rich variety of genres and styles, Queen's repertoire is comparable only to the repertoire of the famous Beatles.

Their music, rhythms, lyrics, powerful sound... All of it was sure to hook millions of listeners with its simplicity and comprehensibility. For example, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" can be easily referred to early rock'n'roll, "Stone Cold Crazy" to speed metal, "Innuendo" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" to progressive/art rock... This list, a fascinating game of "guess the genre", can be continued further, but it will be easier to summarise: Quens were perfectly capable of tampering with absolutely any style, and they succeeded brilliantly in it, which really made them ten steps above the rest of their peers... And that's a damn amazing phenomenon!

The lyrics of the songs were amazingly successful for the band. The four geniuses created the most different masterpieces - from light cheerful ones, to deep ones filled with philosophical meaning....

Do you want to know one more reason for Queen's stunning march? Easy! Just imagine: a rock guitarist with a background in astrophysics... How can you resist such a genius? Brian May is one of the most important persons in the band, who contributed to a number of famous Queen hits. Interestingly enough, in addition to the guitar, this iconic hero is a perfect master of the piano and a couple of other, no less beautiful instruments... In addition, May is also an excellent vocalist - his voice is literally in every recording of any of Queen's albums.

But the most important and unbeatable thing of the band, the main reason of its success and such a colossal influence, is considered to be the one who today bears the posthumous and undeniably deserved title of the greatest performer of all time... Of course, we are talking about the incomparable Freddie Mercury.

This iconic genius had incredible vocal range from a deep baritone to a fantastic high tenor... This phenomenon has always left listeners at the band's live shows in a frenzy of ecstasy. Freddie's voice is something incredible and beautiful. There are not many artists who could perform "Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon" so skilfully and not look bloody stupid!

Only Mercury knew how to make a crowd of thousands sing in unison with him. Every detail of his image, his behaviour on stage, his sound in the end - everything testified to his ardent passion for what he did, and his unquestioning self-confidence.

Freddie was great in every way: he was a consummate performer and an excellent artist, he was a daring virtuoso, he knew all the secrets of proper communication with the public... Many years after his death, many people - even those who are far from Queen - recognise Mercury as one of the strongest performers of our time.

However, one, even an incredibly powerful genius, is not a warrior in the field. All four of them were a kind of puzzle, the completeness of a perfect picture. Each had incredible talent, which together produced fantastic chemistry!

Brian May was a kind of innovator, a daring experimenter with sound. His incomparable guitar solos bore the trademark stamp of special melody and elegance... Roger Taylor earned the title of one of the best drummers in hard rock style with his easily beaten dynamic rhythms. John Deacon is widely recognised for the best bass part in "Another One Bites The Dust"... All together they were an incredibly beautiful picture, complete and damn interesting! All of them created an impressive, incredibly fantasy pure sound...

The fact that it was Queen who diluted the world of rock with elements of theatricality deserves special attention. And they did it so skilfully that it is hard to find a single reason to accuse them of pretentious vulgarity or showmanship. Compared to a number of other famous musicians and bands, Queen were always at the top, and in everything, down to the last detail....

Remembering the legendary event in the world of music, called Live Aid 1985, it is impossible not to note the superiority of Queen on stage. Their enchanting twenty-minute show is rightly regarded as one of the best live performances in rock history.

Their music, those dizzying shows and the incredible images they surrounded the band with... It's all timeless. And today, millions of listeners around the world enjoy their songs with such frenzied pleasure as if they had discovered the band for the first time... With all of the above in mind, we can conclude that Queen's iconic reputation is not just a pretty wrapper, but a reality that would be foolish to argue with. They are a legend. A legend for each of us, regardless of our gender, age and musical tastes... Once you get acquainted with this band at least once, you will never be able to erase it from your memory.
