One Hit Story: "Love Don't Cost a Thing."

"Love Don't Cost a Thing" is one of Jennifer Lopez's most popular songs, released as part of her second studio album J.Lo (2001). Epic Records released it as a single in December 2000.

History of Creation
The story of the song dates back to the summer of 2000. It was then that Greg Lawson came up with the idea for the song. In his opinion, "Love Don't Cost a Thing" was a perfect fit for Lopez's repertoire:
"I wrote and recorded a track that everyone ends up knowing as 'Love Don't Cost Nothing'. I called Damon and played and sang the song to him right on the phone! We ended up working on this song together: someone wrote the melody, someone else wrote the lyric... I came up with the title and he came up with the key line in the chorus, 'Even if you're broke'... Three other writers - Georgette Franklin, Jeremy Munroe and Amil Harris - also contributed to the song..."
In August, after recording the demo, Damon Sharp sent a CD of the song to producer Rick Wake at his studio in New York. Wake, who instantly loved the song, played it for Lopez (whom, by the way, he also loved).
Significance
At the time of the track's release, Lopez was in a relationship with American rapper Sean Combs. The lyric "Love Don't Cost a Thing" is a kind of "cry of the soul". The song suggests that Lopez is unhappy with her man... The media and critics felt that the song was addressed to Combs himself. Shortly after its release, the couple broke up ....

Success
The composition was met with great success all over the world! And today it is considered a "golden classic" of the singer. It is largely due to its popularity on pop radio.
"Love Don't Cost a Thing" topped many charts including the United States, Australia, France and Germany. Most curiously, it was Lopez's first and only hit in the UK.
