Respect or Dislike - What Really Happened Between Ronnie James Dio and Ozzy Osbourne
In the late '70s, Osborne was scandalously dismissed of Black Sabbath, one of the greatest bands in heavy metal history. His addiction to alcohol and substances began to take a toll on the rest of the inconvenienceand eventually Ozzie had to think about about his solo career. And if it weren't for his spouse Sharon - Who knows how the fate of the Prince of Darkness would have turned out.
Soon the group found new voice - he was Ronnie James Dioone of the most beloved vocalists of all time! But his arrival was not smooth and long awaited in the circle of devoted fans. And soon there were legends that Dio and Osborne had become sworn enemies! But was it true?
Sabbath fans were not thrilled with Dio
Today, hardly anyone would dare to speak of Dio as a about the vocalist in a negative way. However, when he first came to Black SabbathThere were a lot of people who wanted to come.
The first concerts of the renewed lineup were a riot: the audience resented - "Why do we need Dio? Bring back Ozzy!" And Ronnie had a hard time putting up with that - he was literally stepping over himself to continue performing, while fans of the scandalized Osborne booed him. It was also difficult because he was Americanwhile Sabbath was a British band. Believe me - some of this is creepy. hit.
Nevertheless, the members of Sabbath were completely satisfied a new vocalist. Together with Dio, the band recorded two of their the most powerful album - "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules."! But in the name of this the musicians had to fire their manager Don Arden. The father of Sharon, Ozzie's wife, kept telling them, "This guy will never replace Ozzie! Stop doing nonsense!" But his opinion didn't seem to be interested in.
"Ronnie is a divine vocalist! He has an incredible voice, and when he sang, it was a real miracle! We felt the potential," said guitarist Tony Iommi.
You can't argue with that: Dio's vocals The following is considered to be one of the most characteristic and inimitable in rock! But he really couldn't outshine Ozzy - and it wasn't about not in the voice.
"They're totally different, you can't compare them. Ronnie is a professional singer, and Ozzy is an entertainer, a showman, you know? Dio hypnotized the audience with his performance, while Osbourne rocked the room! You can't compare them," Iommi emphasized.
Mean jokes and lack of respect
When Ozzy found out that Dio had replaced him in Sabbath, he started fuel conflict with rude remarks and mean jokes. "Prince of Darkness" went on tour with a famous midget actor By John Edward Allento whom he gave an unambiguous nickname "Ronnie".
At concerts, Osborne was constantly making fun of "Ronnie," exposing him to his slaveand made sarcastic comments like, "And that's my personal midget, 'Ronnie. He's stupid and lives in a hole!" And at the end of the show, "Ronnie" hung up. And so for all eight months.
Dio, for his part, at first tried to respectfully to relate to Ozzie - he once even said that he had never will not be able to eclipse Osborne, because his contribution to Sabbath was invaluable. But having realized that Ozzy's profound don't give a damn at his tolerance, Ronnie began to lose control over himself.
"Osborne is a good artist, but not a creator - he's not likely to sit down and write something worthwhile from scratch, by himself, without the help of other musicians. And his attitude is sad... Why this clowning around in rock music?!"
In the same interview Dio said:
"Why should I respect him? I treated him well, but when I became the lead singer of Sabbath - he literally started to weed me out. The man has no respect for anybody. And I don't think I should respect him in response to his anti-respect for me."
Ronnie several times. left Black Sabbath, and eventually founded the Heaven & Hell 2006. The band included Tony Iommi, Vinnie Appisi, and Geezer Butler. His departure in 1992, right in the middle of a tour, turned out to be scandalous. Ozzy announced that he was leaving the stage and asked his Sabbath comrades to perform at his warming up. Everyone agreed. Everyone except Dio. He was incredibly outraged:
"All these years he's been slinging mud at us, and now he wants us to perform for him?! I wash my hands of him. He doesn't deserve it!"
Dio scandalously left, and as a result Sabbath was forced to at the last minute call for help Rob Halford from Judas Priest.
And yet the ice curtain has fallen...
In 2010 Ronnie James Dio is gone: the legendary vocalist passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 67. Only after it happened Osborne shed a ray of light on their complicated relationship:
"There were no conflicts between us. Rather - all these statements were the result of youth. I found out about his illness a few months before his death. I wrote to him, offered to help him. I pointed out that if he needed anything - he could always call or write, I would definitely help. And then he was gone. It's a great loss for rock, for the world and for me personally... He was an outstanding singer. There's no one like him anymore.
