Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Out of My Head": 2000s Dance Hit!

The song became Minogue's first major hit in the US after her cover of "The Locomotion" reached number three! "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was a hit in England and in the singer's home country of Australia.

The track "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" became a real phenomenon of pop music of those years: light and encouraging, modern and damn danceable, and at the same time deep, filled with lyrics ... It is worth noting how skillfully Kylie shows restraint in vocals . In many ways - it captivates, sets the desired character and mood of the lyrics ...

This song is also popularly known as "La La La, La La La La La" because of the catchy chorus! It can be assumed that this is similar to the purposeful pull and influence of Kylie's obsession: "I can't get you out of my head / La-la-la / La-la-la-la." Saying this over and over again seems like Kylie is out of her bounds...

Despite the simplicity of the lyrics, in its own way, the dark "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" is very far from the upbeat sound of Kylie in the late 80s and early 90s ... At that time, Minogue was known mainly because of the pop songs such as her 1988 debut single The Loco-Motion!

History of creation

The song was written by Kathy Dennis and former Mud guitarist Rob Davis. Katy already had several hits including "Just Another Dream" and "Too Many Walls". In an interview with Songwriting magazine, she said:

“It was organic… We didn’t even try to do something imaginary! We wrote 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' when we felt like something was really flaring up…"

Katy and Rob originally wrote the song for S Club 7, but their manager rejected the track... Then "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" was given to A&R executive Kylie. If rumors are to be believed, Minogue agreed to record the track after listening to the demo tape for just 20 seconds!

The single immediately became popular after its release (in September 2001). It reached number one in about 40 countries (excluding Finland), and has sold over 6 million copies worldwide.

The composition "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", as well as the video shot for it, became a key in Kylie's public perception. So, from the “girl from the next entrance”, the singer turned into a flirtatious and sophisticated personality ...

At the 2002 Brit Awards, Kylie performed a Blue Monday-style version of the song by New Order. The remix was subsequently released on the B-side of the single "Love At First Sight" (2002).

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head"'s first week on the UK charts was Kylie's personal 262nd week, making her the most successful Australian singer yet! Also, with this song, Minogue set her biggest UK sales record of 1,037,235 copies. It was the most played single of 2001 (the video for the song was played 45,577 times on UK TV!)

Music video

The song was accompanied by an ultra-modern video! The director of the video, Dawn Shadforth, made Kylie dress up and drive into the future in the style of a 60s utopia!

Interesting Facts…

According to PRS for Music, it was the most played song of the 2000s in the UK. The track received the most air and live covers in the first decade of the 21st century, while Britney Spears' single "Toxic" was the second most played song. And by the way, both songs were written by the same author - Kathy Dennis.

Actor Rupert Penry-Jones was dating Kylie at the time of this song's recording. He later told what could have caused their separation:

“I wasn't really into her music… Once when she sang 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' to me, I stupidly told her, 'Yeah, that's good. But I would rather hear you perform some kind of rock, acoustic ... "Then she was very angry with me!"
