Disasters centered around "Layla" by Eric Clapton

"I had to admit that being part of Derek and the Dominos was just a front for the fact that I was trying to steal someone's wife..."

"Layla" - Facts and Details Related to Eric Clapton's Timeless Hit

Surely every fan of rock and just a lover of good classical music is familiar with the song Layla: written Eric Clapton, it was addressed to the beauty Patti Boyd… It was a big hit for the group Derek and the Dominos, however... few people know the wild facts behind this song. Substance-fuelled madness, hedonism, and even death have all left their mark on this now-classic composition... You could even say that its release marked the end of idealism. 60s! And right in the middle of this musical maelstrom are two legendary guitarists: Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Yes: the crazy truth is that Layla (like most of the material for the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs) was inspired by Clapton's obsession with Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd

Harrison and Clapton were friends and the latter formed Derek and the Dominos

Harrison and Clapton were best friends at the time when the rock legend wrote a song about unrequited love, and the results were far from what he had hoped for ... Although Layla became one of Clapton's greatest hits, the album itself was not much of a success... Formed by Clapton Derek and the Dominos also seemed doomed, as each of the band members faced hard times.

This happened in 1970: Eric Clapton, Dwayne Allman, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle and Jim Gordon formed a supergroup known as Derek and the Dominos. Despite their huge talents, the band seemed doomed from the start, with even Clapton himself calling them "a fictional band" afterward.

Many years later, Clapton also admitted that his main goal was to create a team with which he would record a series of love songs about Patti Boydwife of George Harrison

“I had to admit that being part of Derek and the Dominos was just a front for the fact that I was trying to steal someone’s wife…”

In fact, Harrison was not faithful to Boyd...

Charming Patti Boyd
Charming Patti Boyd

One day, when Clapton was dating Patty's sister Paula, Harrison suggested that he switch partners for one night! Clapton refused this offer ... There is also a story when one of Clapton's ex-girlfriends came to visit Harrison and Boyd after the breakup ... Boyd considered her his girlfriend, but Harrison had other ideas about the guest ... He sent his wife to stay with friends to get a little romance with her Having fun, he called Boyd and said that the girl had left, and now she - Patty - could return home. Harrison's romance with his wife Ringo Starra, Maureen Starkey, was the last straw for Boyd ...

When Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs flopped, Clapton went on a three-year binge

Album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
Album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

Album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was released in November 1970, but this declaration of love did not bring the results that he had hoped for Clapton… The album not only didn’t appeal to the public (mainly due to the anonymity that Clapton insisted on), but also didn’t evoke the emotions that he hoped for from Boyd… Yes, she was touched by the song Layla, however, she was still married to Harrison. When she refused Clapton, he plunged into a depression-induced booze that lasted about three years ... And it's not just about alcohol now. Substances also occupied an important place in his life at that time ...

By the way: it was the substances that separated the group Derek and the Dominos… After releasing only one album, the band broke up when they were trying to record tracks for their second LP.

“It scares me to think about it,” Clapton recalled in an interview. “All this exhausted the group, and there was a hostility that had not been there before! When substances break into the team, something happens to the relationship ... They just dissolve. What held us together was thrown out and the atmosphere was so thin that it could be cut with a knife!”

A dark cloud seemed to envelop the former members of the group when they parted ... Years of substance abuse also took their toll: in 1980 bassist Carl Radle died of a kidney infection associated with substance and alcohol abuse. He was 37 years old.

Drummer Dominos, Jim Gordon spent a truly turbulent 70s, eating alcohol and not only ... Against this background, he developed schizophrenia. He stopped sleeping and eating normally and could no longer play drums. Many doctors accused him of substance abuse and he was being treated for alcoholism rather than schizophrenia. His paranoia got out of control in June 1983 when he decided his 71-year-old mother was a demon. We will not go into details, just say that Gordon was sentenced by the age of 16 deprivation of liberty and several times denied parole ...
