Leonard Albert Kravitz was born in Manhattan, New York, in the spring of 1964, the son of actress Roxy Roker and television producer Cy Kravitz. The childhood of the future star took place on the Upper East Side of Manhattan: Lenny attended school and church (from the age of 13), and on weekends he was sent to his grandmother Bessie, who lived in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area (Brooklyn). The passion for music woke up in him quite early: already at the age of 3, Lenny was drumming on pots and pans, while making an important appearance that he was playing drums! At the age of five, he announced that he intended to become a musician when he grew up. Later he got a real drum set and a guitar. Parents had nothing against the creative passion of their son. Moreover: it was they who instilled in Lenny a love for R&B, jazz, classical, opera, gospel and blues. Kravitz would later say:

“My parents were very supportive of the fact that I fell in love with music early on. They took me to many concerts, and I am very grateful to them for this ... "

Toward the mid-70s, Lenny and his parents moved to Los Angeles, where Kravitz, at the insistence of his mother, sang in a California youth choir for three years. It was during this period that Lenny discovered rock music: he was absorbed by the work of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath and other bands very popular in those years ... Then he said that he was “attracted by cool style, girls and rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Later, he started doing TV commercials and things seemed to be on the up! In the late 80s, Kravitz moved to New York, where one of his roommates turned out to be actress Lisa Bonet (his future wife). During this period, Lenny drew inspiration from the work of the rock monsters of the 60s and 70s: he was inspired by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles ... So, he formed his style based on the principles of returning to the basics: it sounded very fresh, and at the same time humorously tasteless (according to most critics ...) Kravitz signed his first contract with Virgin Records. At the same time, he meets the engineer Henry Hirsch, who will become his mainstay for many, many years ... As Kravitz himself said:

“I saw a kindred spirit in him…”

Let Love Rule, Kravitz's debut album, was released in the late 80s. The single of the same name from it became a big breakthrough for the novice musician ... By the way: at first, Lenny's retro style misled critics. Most believed that this was just a ploy, thanks to which Kravitz could attract the attention of the general public. However, the new decade proved that it was Lenny who became the trendsetter (in a sense of the word): it was in the 90s that retro style became an integral part of the mainstream. As for the musician himself, he did not stand still in terms of creative development: soon “Justify My Love” was released - a hit single that Kravitz wrote especially for Madonna ...

The second album, Mama Said, turned out to be much stronger than its predecessor ... In many ways, this was due to Kravitz's personal tragedy associated with his divorce from Bonet ...

The album featured "Always on the Run" (a collaboration with Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash) and the Curtis Mayfield-style hit "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over". The last composition only confirmed the fact that Kravitz's success was not an accident...

However, the best was yet to come!

One of Kravitz's best albums is considered to be Are You Gonna Go My Way: every song from it was the winner of the nominations, and the video for the title track became the most watched on MTV! With the release of Are You Gonna Go My Way, Kravitz became an arena headliner in the US and was also featured on the covers of countless magazines…

The new album came out only a few years later ... And, unfortunately, it turned out to be unfocused. In a word, Circus greatly disappointed Kravitz's fans... However, the "5" that followed gave the music lovers the hit "Fly Away"! It was later re-released with a couple of bonus tracks, including the song "American Woman" (a remake of the Guess Who hit).

In the new millennium, the musician released Lenny (2001), Baptism (2004) and It Is Time for a Love Revolution (2008). Kravitz made his Oscar nomination debut in 2009 with Precious. While filming his next role - a cameo in the highly anticipated adaptation of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games - in the summer of 2011, he released his ninth album, Black and White America.

He released his tenth studio album Strut in September 2014, preceded by the disco-rock single "The Chamber". After a four-year hiatus, Kravitz returned in September 2018 with his 11th album, Raise Vibration. Later that year, a deluxe collection of remixes was released.
