The top debuts in rock history

The best debut rock albums in history - today we're going to remember just that! It's rare for a band to release a truly classic album the first time round. Most bands take years to hone their sound, so expecting them to succeed on the first try is to expect a lot. However, sometimes there are exceptions to the rule... Today we will talk about them....

Van Halen (1978)

Album van halen (1978)

Van Halen quickly ran out of steam, becoming almost a parody of themselves by the early 80s, but you can't help but take credit: their 1978 eponymous debut was an absolute monster of rock! Guitarist Eddie Van Halen rewrote the rules of guitar playing, applying his highly distorted shredding style, the best example of which is the outstanding instrumental track "Eruption".

Appetite For Destruction (1987)

The best-selling American debut album was also one of their best. Guns N 'Roses arrived on the hard rock scene and began to disrupt it with their dirty sound and aesthetic, exemplified by guitarist Slash's virtuosic but still rocking playing and singer Exl Rose's powerful vocals. Lead singles "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City" and "Sweet Child O'Mine" are rock radio classics....

Rage Against The Machine (1992)

rage against the machine (1992)

While bands like Limp Bizkit and Crazy Town were searching for new depths of horror sound in the late 90s and early 2000s, Rage Against the Machine was a band interested not only in creating catchy riffs, but also in setting politically charged lyrics. All of this is evident in their landmark 1992 debut, which is brimming with songs of angry protest...

Boston (1976)

Album boston (1976)

It's hard to find albums where every track is a winner, but the 1970s rock band Boston's debut album of the same name definitely fits that category. There are only 8 tracks on the album, but each one is strong enough to be considered a classic! In fact, the first 5 tracks were released as singles.

Black Sabbath (1970)

From the very beginning of the title track, with its notoriously demonic guitar riff, it's clear that Black Sabbath changed the course of rock music forever. Indeed, the band's eponymous debut is often credited with giving birth to heavy metal, and the fact that it was released in the early '70s, when the music world was moving away from the hope and optimism of the hippie generation, is just proof... It's not hard to see why Black Sabbath scared the hell out of concerned parents and church groups the world over: if the crushing doom of the band's slow rock game didn't fill you with dread, the haunting album cover certainly did the trick....

Please Please Me (1963)

Album Please Please Me (1963)

Unlike most bands, The Beatles' music has only improved over time! In fact: if you gave someone just Please Please Me and their latest album Abbey Road, they'd think it was the work of two different bands! Although Please Please Me is far from their best work... The Beatles recorded most of the tracks in just 12 hours at Abbey Road Studios on 11 February 1963, which is just obscene!

Ten (1991)

Music album ten (1991)

Seattle's grunge scene was the biggest movement in American music of the 1990s, and Pearl Jam were one of the major bands to emerge from that scene. The band rose from the ashes of another influential Seattle band, Mother Love Bone. And their debut Ten was a remarkable achievement, showcasing a unique (for the time) combination of a heavy sound associated with the grunge scene and classic rock... The band unfortunately provoked many inferior wannabe bands that imitated Vedder's deep vocal style.

The Doors (1967)

Combining the poetic songwriting of enigmatic frontman Jim Morrison with a sense of hard rock, The Doors burst onto the scene fully formed with their eponymous debut, which was recorded in just six days in the summer of 1966. Inspired by two hit singles, "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" and "Light My Fire," The Doors are a powerhouse of raw psychedelic rock and roll mixed with jazz, blues and even classical music! A terrific first album...

As it's probably obvious by now, the best debut albums are usually those that have had a huge impact on the rock music genre as a whole. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, so it's only natural that his band's debut album is also considered one of the best. "Are You Experieced" introduced the world to the legendary guitarist's unique approach to songwriting and musicianship: it contains such classic tracks as "Foxy Lady," "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary." In fact, the best thing that can be said about "Are You Experienced" is that it doesn't sound like the band's debut album at all! It's too confident...

The Blue Album (1994)

The blue album (1994)

Weezer's debut, commonly referred to as The Blue Album, is considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of the 90s, containing 10 tracks of pop-rock perfection. The Blue Album is also, without a doubt, one of the most important albums of that decade....

The Clash (1977)

Album the clash (1977)

The Clash's eponymous debut album, one of punk rock's earliest (and best), was a hit rallying cry for the disparaging young people growing up in the UK in the late 1970s. The Clash touched on topics such as unemployment, race relations and anti-American sentiment... And although punk rock has come a long way in the decades since, this album still stands alongside the likes of the Sex Pistols' debut album.

Unknown Pleasures (1979)

Unknown Pleasures works not only as a defining work of a cultural movement - in this case, the darker, more atmospheric side of punk rock - but also as a look into the tormented mind of Joy Division singer and songwriter Ian Curtis. The 10 tracks of Unknown Pleasures ebb and flow between themes of passion and despair, with Curtis' haunting vocals backed by Bernard Sumner's heavy guitar work...

Horses (1975)

Patti Smith's debut album horses (1975)

Patti Smith's debut album remains one of the ultimate examples of poetry and rock 'n' roll. The beat-poetry infused lyrics combine with a killer backing band to create an effect that, in Smith's own words, "would make a certain type of person not feel alone. People who were like me are different..." The importance of Horses to rock music as a whole cannot be overstated, as it was not just a landmark achievement in the punk rock movement (which was still in its infancy in 1975), but also a masterpiece of Smith's own creation as one of rock's first and most influential female idols.

The Cars (1978)

It's hard to imagine another band releasing a debut album filled with radio hits like The Cars. Guitarist Elliot Easton recognised this when he said:

"We used to joke that the first album should have been called The Cars' Greatest Hits, and it's not hard to see why. Although only three tracks - 'Just What I Needed', 'My Best Friend's Girl' and 'Good Times Roll' - were released as singles, the truth is that we could pick any one of the nine songs on the album and instantly, there you go - here's a radio hit!"

Led Zeppelin (1969)

Led Zeppelin, the gods of hard rock, have released a monstrous debut album, which is actually pretty incredible considering the time frame in which it was created. As many people know, Led Zeppelin emerged from the disbanded rock band The Yardbirds, who had contractual obligations for a series of concerts. Guitarist Jimmy Page was the only remaining member and had to struggle to put together a new band - hence Led Zeppelin was born. The band's eponymous debut somehow emerged from this mess as a landmark achievement, laying the groundwork for Zeppelin's ascent into the upper echelons of rock music. The band would have much better albums, but there is so much raw energy and power in their first that it remains an important component of rock history...

Definitely Maybe (1994)

The cover of the music album definitely maybe

Oasis, led by the infamous Gallagher brothers, Liam and Noel, had no doubts about their desire to be a commercial band. Oasis had huge sales and they were damn proud of it. It also helped that they wrote phenomenal songs. The album's track list would look like a greatest hits compilation, only Oasis have done a lot of great work since their debut... Definitely: this has everything a great rock record should have: a loud, confident sound....

The Stone Roses (1989)

The stone roses album (1989)

Although it was not a significant commercial success, The Stone Roses was revered by critics and is considered one of the best rock albums ever made. On their debut, The Roses utilised everything from psychedelic rock to electronic dance, and accomplished the rare feat of creating a near-perfect album on their first attempt. Unfortunately, legal disputes and internal turmoil meant that only one further album, 1994's uneven The Second Coming, was released before the band broke up....
