Top U2 Songs

We recall the best tracks of the legendary band U2...

Group U2: a selection of the best songs

U2 is a legendary rock band from Dublin formed in the 1970s. Today they are one of the most popular, successful and influential bands in the history of music... It is today for U2 - a stadium filled with fans who know (and sing) every word in every song - a common thing. But it wasn't always like this... At the beginning of their career, it was not a reality, but a dream: U2 members were ordinary teenagers who wanted to play rock and roll. It all started when drummer Larry Mullen posted a leaflet on his school's bulletin board in search of like-minded people and aspiring musicians. As a result, three of his bandmates responded: Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton.

U2 performed alongside Queen, David Bowie and other icons of the time at the massive 1985 Live Aid concert, where fans waved flags emblazoned with their band names. Their trajectory was fast-paced and continued to grow as they went... U2 have won more Grammys than any other band in history! They were also the first group to release a number one album in every decade since the 80s. The number of singles that immediately come to mind as U2's greatest hits is quite extensive. And today we remember the best of them!

Early hits...

U2 began their ascent with "I Will Follow" in 1980, which became a hit on radio stations around the world thanks to its cohesive rhythm, fast-paced chorus and intriguing, slightly off-kilter chord progression... From the very beginning, Bono drew inspiration from the most vulnerable corners of his psyche, and "I Will Follow" was inspired by his late mother.

In 1983, U2 not only released their first UK number one album, but also the thoughtful, highly inspiring track "New Year's Day", which became their first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart!

The iconic track "Pride (In The Name of Love)" is a tribute to activist Martin Luther King Jr., who was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis... This composition also serves as a striking demonstration of Bono's vocal power:

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is known for its dark lyrics, militaristic drumming, and melodic harmonies...

All the tracks mentioned represent not only the initial success of U2, but also the hallmarks of their sound: deafening rhythms, unexpected openings in melodies and lyrics that are rewarded with applause from many listeners ...

Experimenting with sound...

If there was one album that could be singled out as U2's greatest opus, it's certainly The Joshua Tree, their 1987 triumph that fuses rock and new wave with ballad and stylistic overtones of Irish and American folk... Two tracks from from this album, "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" became the band's only number one singles on the charts.

"With or Without You" is U2's best ballad: heartache permeates every note, and it all explodes in one of the most magnificent climaxes recorded on tape...

While working on "Where the Streets Have No Name" there was a famous curiosity: Brian Eno, the producer of the album, got so carried away recording that ... he accidentally completely erased the track.

Rumor has it that Pat McCarthy, the engineer Eno had sent out to fetch tea at the time, lost his temper and attacked Brian, grabbing him by the breasts!

Crowd favorites!

After The Joshua Tree, they have established themselves as one of the biggest rock stars in the world! U2 kicked off a string of mind blowing songs, one of which is "Desire" from 1988's Rattle & Hum!

During the Rattle & Hum tour, the band recorded "Angel of Harlem" at Sun Studios, the legendary Memphis venue where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and other greats recorded their most revered material...

The nineties provided the group with complete freedom and resources for bold experiments!

As a result, the world saw the track "Mysterious Ways": flirting with the psychedelic melodies of the 60s is obvious here. At the same time - U2 do not neglect modern sounding ...

Masterpieces of the new millennium

"Beautiful Day" brought together several facets of the band's greatest hits and introduced something completely new! The track dominated radio, and eventually won a Grammy for song of the year.

The pyrotechnic pop-rock continued with the single "Elevation", which immediately became a cult hit thanks to Bono's falsetto "ooohs" ...

In 2004, the group released their next hit track "Vertigo" ("Vertigo"):

The song "City of Blinding Lights" can be described as the band's sparkling ode to New York...

Her instantly recognizable chords have become the soundtrack to several notable on-screen moments...

Uplifting hymns...

Any list of the best U2 songs should include at least two inspirational ballads...

The early 1984 hit "Bad" shows Bono moving from quiet sincerity to a mighty roar, while "One" serves as a revelation that sounds very soft and stays alive...

"Stuck in the moment" is another soulful tune with a poignant backstory...

With its cascading chords and radically empathetic lyrics, "Walk On" may be their most comforting track to date:

Originally written for Burmese politician and human rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi, the single was released in November 2001…
