About the joint Christmas duet of Ed Sheeran and Elton John
Merry Christmas - collaborative single Ed Sheeran and Elton John. As you might guess from the title, the song sings of the brightest and most magical holiday of the year - Christmas! She came out December 3, 2021 and very quickly won the recognition of the public and critics: first place in UK Singles Chart is the second number one for Elton John in 2021. For Ed Sheeran, "Merry Christmas" became his 12th UK number one hit. Which of these two came up with the idea to record such a positive and warm single? We invite you to find out below.
The song was released in early December, but in a week it managed to become viral! All because it is endowed with an unusual, magical and very cheerful atmosphere! It's nice that two geniuses of their eras, Ed Sheeran and Elton Johnhave created a shared legacy. This is really a great New Year's gift for all the fans! Aptly named "Merry Christmas", the composition is the perfect mixture of celebration and silliness - kind and fun, like in a fairy tale. All profits from sales go to two charities: the Sheeran Music Foundation in Suffolk and the John AIDS Foundation. This makes this song even more meaningful and important.
Merry Christmas - Christmas debut in the repertoire of a young, but already incredibly popular English singer Ed Sheeran. For Elton John, this is already his third New Year's single, after the release "Step into Christmas" (1973) and "Cold as Christmas" (1983). Sheeran previously wrote a Christmas song in 2016 "When Christmas Comes Around" for Matt Terry - winner of the show X Factor. And now he has more experience in 2021.
According to Sheeran, the idea to record a joint single belongs to Elton John. Ed revealed in an interview that he wrote the chorus the same day he and John called and agreed to record together. The duo only announced their collaboration on November 29, 2021, and “Merry Christmas” was released just a few days later. The musicians also revealed that all profits from the single will be shared equally and donated to their charities. That's what Ed Sheeran said during a speech "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon"which took place in November 2021:
“When I wrote the chorus, Elton John and I got on the phone, and I went to him. We ended up writing three Christmas songs, including Merry Christmas".
“Pour some wine, let's drink and pray for December snow.
I know this year has been painful, but it's time to let it go.
What will happen next year? You never know for sure…”
Music video on Merry Christmas was posted on YouTube on December 3, 2021, the day the single was released. The video charges with a festive atmosphere, positive and joy. It's very funny to see how Ed Sheeran flies through the air with a giant snowman or how he performs a deliberately ridiculous sexy dance in the outfit of the Snow Maiden. And Elton John? How much warmth comes from this wise genius. There are also references in the video and the song itself, for example, to a romantic comedy "Real Love" (2003), as well as to the English Christmas hits of past years: "Last Christmas" (1984), "Walking in the Air" (1982), "Merry Christmas Everyone" (1985) and "Stay Another Day" (1994).
In a week, the music video gained more than 21 million views on YouTube. Judging by the comments, the audience liked the duet of Ed Sheeran and Elton John:
“Such a positive and cheerful holiday song… It makes you forget all the bad times of this year!”
“A lovely merry Christmas song. The lyrics are cool and catchy, and the music video puts you in a good mood!”
