Norah Jones: the singer's biography and success story
The "golden hour" of this remarkably talented American came in 2002 with the release of her debut album Come Away with Me. Then - just 23-year-old girl instantly became a star! The album itself became a leader of Billboard 200, and the single Don't Know Why - world-famous, and the biggest hit of the beginning jazz diva!
Our heroine was born in New York on March 30, 1979. Her love of music was passed down from her parents: her mother Sue Jones is a famous Australian actress and her father Ravi Shankar is a composer widely known as a virtuoso on the sitar.
In 1986, the family broke up... Her parents divorced, and 7-year-old Nora enrolled at the Dallas School of Performing and Visual Arts. Already in high school, it was impossible to pull the girl away from the saxophone! Nora played the wind instrument in the school choir and also performed with a local band!
After graduating from the University of North Texas with a degree in jazz piano - Nora was twice named best jazz vocalist and also won the award for best original composition!
First Success and Recording Albums
At the turn of the noughties Nora signed a contract with the Blue Note Records label. Starting a band with Jesse Harris, a fellow university student, she recorded her debut demo First Sessions (2001).
Soon followed the first album called Come Away with Me. It is considered the beginning of the successful career of our jazz diva! It brought Nora a dizzying popularity, and with it thousands of devoted fans all over the world!
The next work was the album Feels like Home, released in 2004 and took the top position in 16 countries! The album sold 10 million copies worldwide! In the United States it went platinum four times!
2005 was a great year for Nora: she won two Grammy Awards at once! The first one - in the category "Best Female Pop Vocalist" (the song Sunrise), and the second one - "Best Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration" (recorded with Ray Charles Here We Go Again)!
Intending only to move forward, already in 2007 Nora releases her third album Not Too Late! Unlike her two previous works, this one was the most difficult for her... Arif Mardin, Nora's producer died in 2006... By the way - her efforts paid off: a leader in 20 countries, 6 million copies sold at the speed of sound!
It seemed that the stunning success of the singer would never fade away! But... the release of the fourth studio album The Fall (2009) was not accompanied by the former excitement: the third place in the American hit parade, 1,5 million copies of circulation...
Despite this, Norah Jones became one of the best jazz performers from 2000 to 2009, and her Come Away With Me was the top seller in her genre for the past decade!
Music in movies
Today, fans of Norah Jones can not only hear their favorite hits in the movies, but also to see the jazz diva herself on the screen!
The world of cinema opened its doors for the singer in 2002, with the release on the big screens of the romantic comedy "Love with Notice"! Nora played herself, and only 2 years later she was invited to shoot an episode of the famous "Sesame Street"!
After influential Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai took a liking to her, Nora became the main character of the film My Blueberry Nights (her song The Story also became the soundtrack to it)!
Later, the singer said that the project caught her at once! She immersed herself into the role and the work with the famous director, and she is very happy about it!
