History of the song "Gyongyhaju Lany" (1969)
Many listeners are familiar with the composition of the Scorpions "White Dove". But this is where the legs of such a heartfelt ballad “grow” from ... Alas, the current generation of music lovers will find it difficult to answer this question. And it was like this...
Recording a song
The Hungarian band Omega recorded its main hit back in the late 1960s. The composition about "The Girl with Pearl Hair" worthily decorated the album 10,000 lépés, and won unheard of popularity in a number of countries, including the Soviet Union!
If we talk about Omega separately, then the guys started their formation very worthily! A year before the release of "Gyongyhaju Lany", the band was noticed by the famous British manager John Martin. He also invited Omega on a tour of Foggy Albion, where the chic debut album “Omega Red Star from Hungary” was born!
The guys were delighted with Britain, and were already going to start recording the second record! However, dissatisfied with their visits to the capitalists, the leadership of Hungary ordered otherwise: alas, the path to Foggy Albion was closed for Omega ... And very, by the way, in vain.
In 1969, "10,000 lepes" saw the light of day. This time the guys have outdone themselves! The record came out truly luxurious ... Largely thanks to "Gyongyhaju Lany" - the band's biggest hit in the near future! The lyrical text of the song was written by Anna Adamish, the soulful music was written by Gabor Presser.
Piercing, with a catchy chorus and psychedelic motifs that were fashionable in those years - it is not surprising that the ballad instantly won the listeners' hearts! Filled with the spirit of romanticism and mysticism, her heartfelt lyrical story told about a mysterious beauty with pearl hair who gave people light and hope...
A year later, the composition was released as a single, and for 60 weeks it remained the undisputed leader of the Hungarian hit parade!
Feeling the ballad's potential, the band released several more versions of it: the English-language "Pearls in her hair" and "Perlen im Haar" in German.
The song quickly turns into a hit, crossing the border of the USSR and giving rise to a great many Russian-language versions, however, as a rule, far from the original ...
The history of the "White Dove" version by Scorpions!
…After more than twenty years, Omega are giving a big show at the Nepstadion stadium (Budapest)! The star guests were Scorpions members Meine and Schenker. The Germans didn’t leave empty-handed… True, in turn, they properly pleased the Hungarians with the hit “Wind of Change”…
Watching the crowd chant "Gyongyhaju Lany" enthusiastically, Maine decided to record his own version of the song! In fact, when the show ended safely, Klaus knocked on the door to Omega's dressing room and asked if he could take their biggest hit as the basis for his new song. They gave good. Very soon, the famous "White Dove" was released as a charity single for refugees from Rwanda.
Later, Janos Kobor shared with reporters:
“…Scorpions were much more popular than us. That's why I liked Maine's idea! We decided that their version would add success to our album as well. Personally, I like their song, although some members of Omega consider it unsuccessful ... "
