In the spring of 2022, millions of people around the world felt the loss... Gone Andy Fletcherone of the founders of the legendary band Depeche Mode. Despite the fact that the focus has always been Dave Gahan and Martin GoreBut it's hard to underestimate Fletcher's legacy, because it's reflected in every track of the band. Of course, the loss of the comrade was a big blow for the rest of DM. But time heals...
In February 2023, Depeche Mode introduced to the world "Ghosts Again." - his first single from the upcoming album, recorded without Andy. Despite the fact that Fletcher was not involved in the work on the track, his influence is hard not to notice...
Memento Mori - what will fans enjoy on the fifteenth album?
"Memento Mori (Remember Death) - is the unusual name DM members gave to their 15th studio album, which is expected at the end of March 2023. However, it fully corresponds to the lyrical message of the tracks. There are 12 of them in all, and each one reflects the theme of life and death in one way or another. From the interview Martina Gora:
"Work on Memento Mori boiled over at the very beginning of the pandemic. The song themes were inspired by those times and losses... And then Andy was gone. But we decided to keep working on the album by all means, because we feel that's what Andy would have wanted. His sudden departure only added meaning and depth to the work...".
The band's keyboardist Fletcher passed away in May 2022 due to an aortic dissection. Work on "Memento Mori" began while he was still alive, but Fletcher never didn't have time to contribute. Dave Gahan explains:
"Andy didn't record anything for this album. He hasn't even heard any of these songs. It makes me sad and hurt because I know that Memento Mori contains tracks that Andy would say, 'Oh, this is the best thing we've done in a while. Sometimes I think I hear him, and he marvels: "Every song is about death?! Really?!"
The band's official website describes the album as "12 tracks with an expanded spectrum of moods and textures, covering everything from paranoia and obsession to catharsis and joy..." In February, the band premiered the first single from the upcoming album, titled "Ghosts Again.". And the public has already been able to appreciate it...
The First Single Without Andy - Ghosts Again Review
"Ghosts Again." was the first single from DM's upcoming album. And after listening to it, fans have high hopes for the whole record! The song is accompanied by with an aesthetic black and white clipThe film of which, according to tradition, was responsible for the filming of the Anton Corbijn. The plot focuses on Gahan and Gora playing a chess game on the roof and then performing in the cemetery. Many saw this video as a reference to Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal. (talking about the chess game scene). Unfortunately, this video is not available on YouTube in Russia.
As for the lyrical meaning, it's about the fact that life is too elusive...
"My friends,
We know we're going to be ghosts after all..."
In his interview, Gahan said the following:
"The track demonstrates an impeccable balance of melancholy and joy..."
In turn, his colleague Gore added:
"This song has the perfect mood. It's that rare track that you can listen to on repeat dozens of times, and it won't get boring..."
Finally…
Definitely: "Ghosts Again" is a very interesting track, with a really deep meaning and at the same time incredibly uplifting mood. It's a very thoughtful, rhythmic track that tells the story of of human existence in this world. The themes of life and the logical departure to a better world lead to interesting reflections...
The members of Depeche Mode declare that every person will eventually become a "ghost.". Nevertheless, they deliver this message as easily as possible, not heavy... It's very pleasant to listen to this song. I want to believe that the rest of the album will be just as powerful.
