Colonel Tom Parker and his "Dancing Chicks" - what did the "diamond manager" do before he met Elvis Presley

"Diamond Manager." - That's often what they call it. Colonel Tom Parker. In fact, he was neither the Parker, nor the Colonel, nor even the American that he always made himself out to be. Andreas Cornelis van Keuijk was Dutch and grew up in a large family of 11 children! Given this fact, it is not surprising that he had to learn hard work at an early age. The young Andreas had been a barker at carnivals in his native Breda, until, as a young man, he escaped to USA. By that time he already had the necessary skills, which came in handy for the famous Colonel in the future...

In States Andreas was torn with the goal of chipping in indecent conditionand he succeeded. He entered America illegally by jumping off his employer's ship. Henceforth he claimed to be called Tom Parkerand he - citizen of the United States. His true ancestry remained under the radar for a long time... Parker was first-rate a carnival barkerwhich played a great role in his ascent. But what is really hard to believe is that before knowing Elvis Presley his most successful event in show business was... a troupe of dancing chickens! Yes, yes, and this is no joke. The Colonel himself once said something like, "Before Elvis Presley, I had nothing but roosters. But that's not quite true. Parker got into the music business at the end of 1930s, and his first charge was Gene Austin. He was followed by country singers like Eddie Arnold and Tommy Sands. None, however, brought Parker such dizzying success as king of rock and roll

Parker found out about Elvis in the middle of 1950s. As a result, he did everything possible and impossible to become the manager of a promising blue-eyed idol! This collaboration began with a high-profile of the hit song "Heartbreak Hotel 1956, and grew into something much more... Into real commercial control.

When Presley became an international artist, his "diamond manager" could get more than half of the income from the whole enterprise! Parker directed not just Elvis's work, but his private life. It was he who insisted that the king of rock 'n' roll go to armyand it was through his efforts that Presley married the Priscilla Beaulieu. The colonel also forbade the musician to tour abroad, probably on the grounds that his "illegal" secret could reveal itself.

Legend has it that Presley at least once tried to fire Colonel Parker. He asked his assistant to tell Parker that he was fired. The request was carried out, but Tom knew how much Elvis disliked such talk personally, replied:

"I'll leave if only Elvis will personally say it to me."

As we can judge, it never came to that... As a result, the Colonel continued to receive a significant portion of Presley's royalties until his death in 1997 year. By the way: he was an avid gambler, and could spend a million dollars a year in Las Vegas! Parker received his honorary title of "Colonel" not because of his service, but because he helped Jimmy Davis to become governor of Louisiana. As a reward, Tom was given the honorary title...
