The Doors (group Dors) - Riders on the Storm (1971) - All about the song

Recall one of the biggest hits of the 1970s... The Doors...

Song History: The Doors - "Riders on the Storm" (1971)

When Jim Morrison studied at the University of Florida at Tallahassee, he had a sweetheart. Her name was Mary Werbelow. She lived far away from him and he had to travel hundreds of miles each time (about three hundred) to see her. The usual mode of transport for those times was hitchhiking. The leader of The Doors often traveled on deserted night tracks, catching random fellow travelers on the side of the road.

I am sure that Morrison has accumulated a lot of stories from those times, which later resulted in the creation of new works that later became hits. In his early works, the image of a lonely traveler constantly appears, who is forced to solve all the falsities of this world one on one.

The origin of the song...

Jim Morrison (Jim Morrison)
Jim Morrison (Jim Morrison)

There are many versions of the origin Riders on the Storm. So…
The first legend says that the song tells the story of a 50s California serial killer who hitchhiked. Once he slaughtered an entire family, and these are 5 people: Karl Mosser with his wife and three children. Soon, Cook killed another fellow traveler. All the forces of the state were sent to search for him. He managed to cross to Mexico, where he was arrested ...

The second version about the composition "Ghost Riders in the Sky"by Stan Jones. According to The Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger, Morrison wrote Riders on the Storm under the influence of this composition.

According to the third version, the idea of the song was inspired by the film "Rain Passenger" or "The Man Who Came in the Rain" (1969). The plot of the film tells about the wife of a pilot who is constantly on the road. One day she is raped by a criminal and she kills him. Here is such an "intriguing" plot. The denouement is even more interesting, perhaps ...

The fourth version is simple and banal... Jim Morrison was in a "cheerful mood" and relaxed for a long time talking on the phone with his friend. Then the muse came to him.

Interesting facts about the song

The song's unique sound was achieved by layering several vocals: soft and loud parts were combined together and processed by effects. The synthesizer was the source of the sound of the rain, and the thunder and the sound of the train were added already during the mixing of the composition.

It was Jim Morrison's last song. He went to France and died a few weeks later. The single was released in June 1971 shortly before Morrison's death.

The song can be seen as an autobiographical account of Morrison's life: he considered himself "Rider in the Storm". "Road Killer" is a reference to a script he wrote called The Hitchhiker ("American Pastor") , where Morrison was going to play the role of a hitchhiker who goes into a thunderstorm and kills. The lines "Girl, you must love your man" can be seen as a desperate request that Morrison addressed to his longtime girlfriend Pamela.

The composition was performed only once by The Doors live on December 12 in the 70th year at a concert in New Orleans. The band's fans have edited the video sequence, and the only way to touch the live performance of Riders on the Storm is…
