Top 10 Classic Rock Albums by Rick Rubin

Top 10 classic rock albums by Rick Rubin - which records are included in this ranking? It was really difficult to make a list, because we are talking about a man whose discography spans hundreds of records ... During his distinguished career spanning decades, Rick Rubin has established himself as one of the most influential figures in the music industry! Even if he had stayed with Def Jam Records, the hip-hop label he founded in his college dorm room, Rubin's place in music history would have already been secured... Still, developing his production ambitions (not to mention his spin -offe Def American and then just American Recordings), Rubin gradually built a career as a super producer, practically unrivaled in terms of creating music of all stripes and styles! Today we take a look at Rick Rubin's top 10 classic rock albums... Let's go!

10. ZZ Top - "La Futura" (2012)

Zz Top - "La Futura" (2012)

We start our list of Rick Rubin's Top 10 Classic Rock Albums with one of the producer's latest superstar resurrection projects: boogie blues titans ZZ Top! Before he was invited to join the group in the studio, almost 10 years had passed since the release of the last Mescalero album of the cult amigos from Texas ... With the help of Rubin, ZZ Top not only got back on horseback, but also achieved a return to ... the shape that so fans hoped!

9. Trouble - "Trouble" (1990)

Trouble - "Trouble" (1990)

You'll have to forgive us as we're shying away from world famous platinum bands for a moment, but Chicago doom metal band Trouble and their eponymous effort definitely deserve a spot on today's list. With an impressive 1990 LP, Rubin's name did underground metal a huge favor as it helped launch both the band and one of the best doom albums of the decade...

8. Neil Diamond - "12 Songs" (2005)

Neil Diamond - "12 Songs" (2005)

Rick Rubin's acclaimed partnership with country music legend Johnny Cash was a big deal for the music industry world! However, in 2005, the producer began working with another popular songwriter, hitmaker of the 60s and 70s Neil Diamond ... Like Cash, Diamond saw his legacy unfairly tarnished by reckless career moves and ridiculous pop production, and therefore - he turned to help to Ruby! And although his "12 Songs" did not match the sales of Cash's records, the album successfully reminded the world of the musician's incredible talent!

7. Black Sabbath - "13" (2013)

Black Sabbath - "13" (2013)

When the infamous original Black Sabbath line-up finally reunited (without drummer Bill Ward, unfortunately) to record their first studio album in 35 years, there was no one to call but Rick Rubin, who immediately advised them to return to their 70s classic... As a result, the light I saw an album with a concise title "13"! Even guitarist Tony Iommi's troubling lymphoma diagnosis couldn't stop the old iron horse of heavy metal from setting up another highly respectable musical pillar to build his dark gothic cathedral...

6. Metallica - "Death Magnetic" (2008)

Metallica - "Death Magnetic" (2008)

The next entry on our list of Rick Rubin's Top 10 Classic Rock Albums probably best illustrates the producer's reputation as a career saver... After all, not many bands have experienced double, self-inflicted PR disasters like Metallica's ill-advised fight against Napster and legend-shattering feature film Some Kind of Monster… In the end, Rubin helped turn their ship around, lay the right vector… The release of Death Magnetic in 2008 at least partly reminded the heavy metal titans of the music that made them famous…

5. AC/DC - "Ballbreaker" (1995)

He almost drove them crazy during the recording process, but we have to admit that Rick Rubin squeezed the best out of AC/DC! This is evident throughout the Ballbreaker (1995) album... In fact, Rick's purist point of view during the recording of the album was so demanding that he not only tested the Young brothers' patience by asking them to write and rewrite songs until they won't be ready, but he even tracked down some very rare tube amps capable of duplicating the sound of the 70s... It turned out flawlessly!

4. Mick Jagger - "Wandering Spirit" (1993)

Mick Jagger - "Wandering Spirit" (1993)

"Wandering Spirit" is Mick Jagger's only solo album from the 1990s! It was a major commercial success, reaching number 12 in the UK and number 11 in the United States, going gold there. The album's hit was 'Sweet Thing'... Rick Rubin, sitting in the producer's chair, encourages Jagger to revisit his blues and rock roots instead of worshiping the pop charts and fleeting trends he rightfully should be flying over...

3. The Cult - "Electric" (1987)

The Cult - "Electric" (1987)

The album "Electric" became the key to Rick Rubin's burgeoning production career... When it was released in 1987, it showed that Rubin is much more than a hip-hop specialist! On top of that, Electric was a fantastic album in every way: it simultaneously reinvented the look and sound of The Cult... It was this record that paved the way for Rick's transition to rock and sowed the seeds of his future success.

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (1991)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" (1991)

Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the fifth studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the first to be released by Warner Bros Records. The album's eclectic collection of musical styles can expand on the basic definition of classic rock! "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" differed significantly from the previous work of the rock band (Mother's Milk): the musicians reduced the presence of "heavy" guitar riffs, and the main themes of the songs were death, addiction, emancipation and wealth ... The record sold 13 million copies, which made her band's most influential bestseller and arguably their definitive career statement (not to mention one of Rick's greatest achievements)...

1. Tom Petty - "Wildflowers" (1994)

And number one on our list of the top 10 classic rock albums by Rick Rubin is his collaboration with Tom Petty! As with Rick Rubin's finest productions, Wildflowers eschewed bizarre studio and digital gimmicks to highlight Petty's songwriting in its purest and most authentic form... The album was certified triple platinum. It is noteworthy that "Wildflowers" was written only by Petty with the participation of Rubin. In their words, they "wanted more freedom than being tied to five guys" (talking about the Heartbreakers). Between 1994 and 1995, four singles were released from the album, the most successful of which was "You Don't Know How It Feels" - the top of the Album Rock Tracks!
