Sabrina-All about the musician: biography of a sexy singer

Unlike many Italian singers who made it to the top in the 80s, Sabrina wasn't ready to do anything to get the public's attention...

Sexy Beauty from the 80s: The Story of Sabrina Salerno (Sabrina Salerno)

Sabrina Salerno, commonly known as Sabrina, is a popular Italian singer, songwriter and producer, model, as well as a successful actress and TV presenter. In total, over 20 million copies of the singer's records were sold! In addition, Sabrina has at least 3 number one hits in her piggy bank! The visiting card of the performer was the track "Boys", which blew up the world's radio stations in the late 80s ... The song was accompanied by a provocative video that cemented the image of a sexual symbol for Sabrina. How did the early years of the icon go and why did the star disappear from the field of view of the media and the public in the 90s? First things first…

Early years

Sabrina Salerno was born in the port city of Genoa, Italy in March 1968. Until the age of five, her aunt was engaged in raising the girl, since Sabrina's father did not recognize paternity, and her mother was not with her daughter ... Then the girl lived with her maternal grandparents in San Remo. In her youth, Sabrina was fond of dancing. She also attended a linguistic school where she studied English, French, Spanish and Russian. In parallel with this, the charming Italian took part in various beauty contests. So, in 1984 she won the titles of "Miss Lido" and "Miss Liguria"! Soon Sabrina met Giampiero Menzone, her first manager, who will help her conquer Olympus...

To break into the Italian show business, Giampiero Menzone advised Sabrina to go to Milan, the Italian capital of the TV industry! He also insisted on recording the first track in English. So, for the first time Sabrina performed the unreleased The combination in Mediaset. She was not chosen, however - she did not give up! In the autumn of the same year, Sabrina first appeared on Italian television in the show VV le donne, presented by Amanda Lear and Andrea Jordan ... From this, her fame and popularity finally began to grow ...

Real luck smiled at Sabrina in March 1986, while participating in the Grand Hotel - a very popular show that allowed her to do comedy, sing and dance like Carmen Russo, who was then the most important sex star on television. Like many other starlets, Sabrina began to pose topless in the same year to attract the attention of the public. These photos will be widely reproduced in the Italian and international press in the coming years…

During the same period, her life was changed by a meeting with Claudio Cecchetto, a well-known music producer in Italy, who agreed to write a song for her in English. It was "Sexy girl". In the summer of 1986, radio stations played this song very often, and Sabrina took part in the Festivalbar for the first time. This success prompted her record company, Five Records, to export the track. So, a few weeks later, "Sexy girl" was released in France and Germany, though without much success. Meanwhile, Sabrina began to actively appear on television ...

Success, scandals...

However, television proved to be secondary to Sabrina in 1987. Indeed, this summer she became one of the most significant Italo dance singers thanks to the hit “Boys”, which became a classic of the late 80s. Recorded with Claudio Cecchetto and his team, the single was released in Italy in May and quickly reached number four on the charts, helped by strong promotion - a sexy video clip and participation, again, in the Festivalbar. The success was huge as the song reached the top 5 in many countries!

To capitalize on this success, Sabrina's debut album was released in the fall of 1987 in Italy and then worldwide! The album also brought a new hit single: "Hot girl". Even though the song was less successful than "Boys", it charted in many European countries and even topped the charts in Spain in early 88! Soon Sabrina became a real phenomenon: magazines, chewing gums, dolls… The singer was everywhere! Because of this, she became a target of Spanish feminists, especially during a concert in Bilbao: Salerno was accused of creating a degrading image of a woman.

Thus, in a few months, Sabrina became the most successful, but also the most criticized Italian singer both at home and abroad ... While her singles were on the charts, the sexy photos of the singer flooded the magazines. But after a famous session for Penthouse in 1987, Sabrina decided to stop posing topless (at least for a few years) and focus on her music career.

New steps and ... a break

New, 1988, became a take-off for the singer! From that moment on, Sabrina was completely under the direction of her manager, who created her own label: Videogram. And while the promotion of her first album continued and opened her doors to the markets of South America, Asia and Eastern Europe, Sabrina was already working on her second LP. Immersed in a whirlwind of promotions, tours and interviews, Sabrina was everywhere. Sabrina's ubiquitous fame in Italy grew stronger and stronger in the international market...

In May, she participated in the Montreux Pop Music Festival in Switzerland. But above all, she got collaborations with the most influential producers of the day. Indeed, her manager convinced Stock, Aitken and Waterman - a trio of British songwriters who spawned a lot of hits (they wrote many hits for many artists, including Kylie Minogue, Bananarama and Samantha Fox) - to write a new single for Sabrina. As a result, "All of me", a song they wrote for Sabrina, was released in mainland Europe in June 1988. The track achieved great success in both Europe and Italy. "All of me" was followed by the equally famous hit "My chico" ...

But already in the first half of the 90s, Sabrina decided to part with her manager, because she could no longer withstand the pressure in which she worked. She also no longer liked the songs she was "offered" to record: she wanted to turn to more personal and more ambitious music. So, her manager filed a case against her, and the ensuing legal battle prevented Sabrina from working in Italy for several months. Despite her moments of gloom, Sabrina remained enthusiastic and began working with new songwriters, ditching dance music for a pop rock sound. During this period, she collaborated with Tony Fenelle, lead singer of Ultravox, and English composer and producer Rod Gammons. She also teamed up with three very good Italian writers and composers: Sandro Zane, Moreno Barbazza, F. Busoni, and also with her French ex-boyfriend Pierre Cosso. Moreover, Sabrina was fully involved as a songwriter.

During the spring and summer of 1993, Sabrina made several TV appearances in Spain in Italy. She took the opportunity to state that she was working with new producers and a new team. In addition, she said that a single is planned for the summer. She added that an album coming out in September is more personal than anything she's done so far. But all these great projects were eventually shelved. However, on July 19, on the set of Bellezze al bagno, Sabrina performed "Mama said" - a new song with a typical American rock sound.

But this potential single did not get a follow-up and had to wait a few months to see Sabrina again on Italian TV.

Return and new look

In 1997, Sabrina returned to television as a singer to promote her songs. If Sabrina was thinking of performing again at the Sanremo festival, the idea had to be abandoned... Indeed, Vasco Rossi wrote a duet for Sabrina and Pino Scotto, an Italian hard rock singer who turned down the offer... In the end, it was decided to re-release Sabrina's last album, but with a different name, Numeri. The reissue was also the title of the (only) new song featured on this release and written by Massimo Riva. This time, Sabrina completely changed her image, which caused a new shock for her fans: she cut her hair! With this hairstyle and a rather masculine outfit, Sabrina erased everything from the image that brought her success ...

A forced break from the stage gave her the opportunity to work on her fifth album. Sabrina re-signed to the independent label RTI Music, who owned the rights to the former Five Records (the label that released her first album). With Enrico Monti, Sabrina turned to Massimo Bonsanto, who co-wrote all the hits from her first album: Sexy girl, Boys, Hot girl… Sabrina also worked with a young team to produce her new album A Flower's Broken, inspired in particular by the sound of 80 -X. In the first half of the year, Sabrina returned to the studio and the first recordings of the album began. In June, she recorded "I love you" (co-written with Bonsanto).

In 2000 and 2001, she almost completely disappeared from the media in Italy. Abroad, Sabrina made only two appearances on Dutch television. However, in 2001, rumors about her possible return began to spread ... She would later return to release Erase / Rewind Official Remix - the last album of the singer at the moment.

Conclusion…

Sabrina Salerno - Over The Pop (1991)

Unlike many Italian singers who achieved success in the 80s, Sabrina was not ready to do anything to attract public attention (reality shows, scandals ...) She just wanted to be a mother and a singer. Her personal life was very pleasant and compensated for all the regrets she experienced during her career.
