Brief Biography

Shade
Shade

Helen Folashade Adu was born on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Her parents, Adebisi Adu, a Nigerian Yoruba economics teacher, and Ann Hayes, an English district nurse, met in London, married in 1955, and moved to Nigeria. When Shada was only four years old, her father and mother separated. After the divorce, Anne Hayes took her daughter and eldest son Bunji with her to England. Thus, Shadeh spent her childhood at her grandparents' home near Colchester, Essex. At age 11, Shadeh settled with her mother in Holland-on-Sea.

After graduating from high school, at the age of 18 Shade moved to London and enrolled at the St. Maarten School of Art to study design. After completing her studies, she worked for a while as a model and menswear designer.

Career: the beginning of the road...

Shade entered the music business in the early 1980s. She initially sang in the band Arriva and later joined a funk band called Pride as a backing vocalist. After performing on the London stage, Pride attracted the attention of many record companies. As a result they signed a contract with Epic Records and formed a band called Sade!

Debut with Diamond Life

The band's debut album was called "Diamond Life"! Released in 1984, it instantly received rave reviews from music critics! The record went four times platinum, both in the United Kingdom and the United States... The main hit singles were "Your Love Is King" and "Smooth Operator".

New releases and new success!

Diamond Life" was followed by "Promise" (1985) and "Stronger Than Pride" (1988). The works showed how Sade slowly perfected their own sound, harmoniously combining jazz, funk, soul, pop and rock... But the best album of the band was yet to come.

Released in 1992, "Love Deluxe" was the most consistent representation of Sade's unique style... Spacey atmosphere, unobtrusive keyboards with touches of piano and drums, dynamic bass lines... The work narrated the memories of love - lost, but preserved deep in the heart...

No Ordinary Love

Feel No Pain

Kiss of Life

It is worth emphasizing that absolutely no one can sing about love so sincerely and so easily as Shade... Though in tone she is still associated with American soul singers, who originally had a great influence on her... The singer's voice is perfect, beautiful... It transfers to the listener all that passion, that strength, determination of the main character of the songs!

It's been exactly 8 years since the release of "Love Deluxe" and now, the world has enjoyed the new sound presented in the album "Lovers Rock"! The album was named after the reggae style of music, known for its romantic sound and content, which the singer Sade listened to in her youth... "Lovers Rock" was a departure from the band's previous use of jazz elements. Instead, the emphasis was on soul, R&B, soft rock, folk, dub, reggae, neo-soul and amateur rock.

After a decade's break, an equally gorgeous work called "Soldier of Love" will be released!

The song of the same name from the album brought Sade another Grammy award for the best R&B performance by a duet or a group.

Sade Live Tour

In spring 2011 the band went on tour called "Sade Live" (also known as "Once in a Lifetime Tour" or "Soldier of Love Tour"). The tour covered Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia... The goal of the tour was to promote the album "Soldier of Love" as well as the hits collection titled "The Ultimate Collection" (2011).

It was the first tour for Sade in almost 10 years! "Sade Live" entered the Top 50 Worldwide Tour (Mid-Year), a music tour ranking by Pollstar magazine, earning over $20 million!

At the end of 2011, Sade's tour ranked tenth on Billboard's annual "Top 25 Tours" list, earning over $50 million at 59 concerts! A live album, Bring Me Home - Live 2011, was subsequently released. (2012).

Later that year, in 2018, Schade's band released "The Big Unknown" for the soundtrack to Steve McQueen's film "Widows." As the film's director himself later recounted, Schade only agreed to write the song because "the original Widows series resonated deeply with her..."

Legacy, influence...

As you can understand from the discography of our heroine, it is not quantity but quality that is important for her... If you omit the concert albums, Shade has only 73 songs! And this despite the fact that the singer has started to perform in 80th years... But what is really surprising, is that among these 73 songs there is not a single bad one! Yes, of course, there are better songs, and there are weaker ones... But not bad ones, that's for sure!

Shade's music is so much deeper than any other artist! She is the antidote to the pervasive fear, mistrust, madness and hatred of 21st century life... She is the exact opposite of everything ignorant, bigoted, intolerant and cruel in the present. This woman's best songs reveal the possibility of a better world, without hiding the grief that defines the current one. If anyone's voice can keep listeners engaged, it's Shade's...
