Making the song "Smooth"

Carlos Santana shared the story behind the creation of "Smooth" in one of his interviews:

“This is an amazing thing… How can I put it… Every time I play Smooth, I feel incredible pleasure, delight, euphoria… I believed in the success of this song from the very beginning! And Rob's sound... It's so pure and beautiful... When I heard it, I immediately knew that this composition would be special... So authentic and sincere, Rob made "Smooth" a level above all previous recordings. After the recording, it became clear that this song is doomed to a great future ... "

Well, very curious! Especially considering the fact that Rob Thomas himself did not believe in the success of the song until the very end:

“This song was the last to be recorded, it was one of the last songs on the Supernatural record. I regarded "Smooth" as something additional, secondary ... But I could not imagine her such further success ... Well: apparently my gut let me down! (laughs)"

Rob Thomas joined the work on the future hit when the music was already completely written. By the way: it belongs to the composer Itaal Shuru. At first, the song was called "Room 17". But after hearing the backing track, Rob began to work on the text, during which the composition received a new name - "Smooth"!

Rumor has it that the lyrics were addressed to Thomas's wife, and the inspiration was Sir Elton John's composition called "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters". The lyrics turned out to be very temperamental, and Rob himself sang them with genuine passion for the demo. They were originally supposed to be performed by George Michael. However, Carlos Santana decided to keep Thomas on vocals. Subsequently, the Matchbox Twenty frontman recalled:

“It was like some kind of fairy tale… It was “Smooth” that brought Carlos back to the radio! I can’t say that this is the best thing in his or my repertoire ... It’s just that it was a very successful period for Latin music, and all the pieces came together in a single, very good puzzle for us ... "

Composition Achievements

Listing all the achievements of this composition - you can safely write a whole book! How many times have world publications put her on the first lines of prestigious tops and awarded her all sorts of laurels! And how many times Santana and Thomas have performed their hit in front of thousands of people... This is a real little magic! Perhaps, we will list the main merits of "Smooth"!

The song was ranked number two on the Best Songs of the 20th Century.
