Smooth Operator (1984) - Sade - All about the song

This track is considered one of the band's most successful songs!

The story of the hit “Smooth Operator” by charming Sade…

"Smooth Operator" is a song by Sade that successfully complemented the debut studio album Diamond Life. The song was released as a single in 1984. In the USA, the track was released only at the beginning of the next year, but it quickly reached the top places, settling on the 5th line of the Billboard Hot 100. “Smooth Operator” lasted for 13 weeks in the top 40! The single also topped Billboard Adult Contemporary for two weeks. In fact, "Smooth Operator" was Sade's first big break in America!

In this song, the charming Sade Adu sings about a man who plays well on the feelings of women... He is irresistibly attractive, smart... He easily seduces girls one by one, playing on the strings of their souls... In general, he is described as a man who, with his angelic eyes can melt a woman's heart. However, his heart is very hard...

"Smooth Operator" was a real breakthrough for Sade in America, a band based in England. The first studio work of the band, Diamond Life, was released in 1984 in their homeland, where this track reached the 3rd line. In America, the record was released only the following year with the first single "Hang On To Your Love". It didn't lead to anything, but the next single "Smooth Operator" climbed to number five and earned the band a reputation as an exotic soulful band with a charming vocalist... Despite the heartless lyrics, this song is often used to signify romantic moments!

Music video

The video for the song was released in 1984. It was filmed by British film director Julien Temple. As mentioned above, in "Smooth Operator" it is sung about a charming "Don Juan", who is very popular among the fair sex, however, he only breaks the hearts of all of them ... Such references in the text as "From coast to coast, from Los Angeles to Chicago" and "Love for Sale" allude to the fact that the hero uses the ladies for his own selfish purposes, for financial gain. He obviously doesn't have any feelings for his companions...

The clip reinforces the message of "Smooth Operator". The main character is presented as a professional criminal. In one scene he shows a gun to an interested buyer, and in others he plays the part of a businessman who is successful with the ladies. As you can tell, he manages to elude the police, who are watching his every move. But, as we can see in the extended version of the clip, Sade put an end to this: cooperating with law enforcement, she hides in the club (in the very one where she sings in the first part of the clip) and sees how the criminal returns late at night. The girl accidentally wraps the equipment, causing the man to notice her and chase her up the stairs. When the police surrounded the building, the hero makes an attempt to escape on the roof. However, after the shot, he falls down and breaks to death ...

This video was nominated twice for the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards. However, the clip missed out on both awards. Pretty unfair considering the clip looks like some kind of Hollywood action movie from the 80s!

Criticism, success!

After the release of "Smooth Operator", critics of top publications wrote:

“The warm, measured voice of a charming vocalist sings about a lover-swindler… Along with first-class musical accompaniment, the image of the immoral character of the song clearly emerges: a heartless don Juan who travels the continents in search of personal gain. It seems that this serves as an allegory for global capitalism… The meanness of an immoral criminal is expressed in such stunning phrases that it is literally impossible not to be tempted…”

Very soon the single became an international hit! "Smooth Operator" topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary in the mid-80s. The track enjoyed and continues to enjoy great success in the cinema! In addition, after almost 40 years, it has not lost its charm and pleasant relaxed mood ... In a word, a musical balm for the soul!
