Song Story: Rolling Stones - Angie (1973)

The Rolling Stones' romantic rock composition "Angie" was a harmonious addition to not only the record "Goats Head Soup."and the entire oeuvre of the iconic musical group. For forty years, fans have continued to theorise and speculate, trying to unravel the - who the hell is Angie.Who is the track dedicated to? The story of the track's creation has a lot of gaps, looks confusing and unclear, as comments of people somehow connected with it are noticeably different, and sometimes even contradict each other.

To whom is the song dedicated?

It's worth starting with the fact that the timing of the song's recording fell on 1972. It was then that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards began composing a poignant and touching ballad about the end of their relationship. It is known that the title of the composition was suggested by Richards. A few months earlier, his first daughter was born, who was named Angie. It's silly to assume that the musician dedicated such a deep and image-rich lyric to his newborn child. However, this female name was definitely on his mind, and was soon used as the title for the track.

At the same time, the word "angie" often used in slang English for the detection of hard drugs. Later in his autobiography, Richards admitted that he created the track as a kind of farewell to heroin addiction, a starting point for a new life. According to one version, he came up with the title of the song while still in rehab in Switzerland.

A number of fans of the band are sure that the song is dedicated to David Bowie's ex-wife Angela. She has repeatedly shared memories of catching her husband in bed with Jagger. This incident allowed to assume that the song - Mick's attempt to placate the girl, to persuade not to publicise what he had seen. However, the name Angie still offered Richards, and therefore these speculations look very dubious and improbable.

Other versions are also popular. Thus, some of them suggest that "Angie" was written in honour of the Hollywood actress Angie Dickinson, others - the famous designer Andy Warhol.

Most likely, the heroine of the song has no real-life prototype. But does it really matter? Despite all the rumours and gossip circling around "Angie", she managed to rise to the top Billboard Hot 100The album reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and topped the Australian and Canadian music charts for more than four weeks.
