Composition and lyrics
One of the most listened to artists in the world, five-time Grammy Award winner and simply one of the youngest idols of millions of people - Billie Eilish is determined to conquer the top charts once again! Her new release "Therefore I Am", released with a music video, is the singer's third single of 2020! As for the music video, it's directed by Ailish herself! But more about him a little later....
Lyrically, Eilish sings about how she doesn't care what anyone thinks of her. The song is "built on a strong bass line", and shows Eilish "fending off media attacks with a series of sharp backbeats"
"I'm not your mate or anything / Hell, you think you're a man / I think, therefore I am."
Ailish sings about hating the endless media coverage and asks fake people to stop talking about her like they know her:
"Take my pretty name off your lips / We're not the same, 'with' or 'without' / Don't talk about me like you know how I feel."
The title line of the single "Therefore I Am" refers to the philosophical teachings of Descartes. The phrase, which translates as "I think, therefore I am", the performer repeats in the choruses. Already by tradition, the song was produced by Finneas O'Connell - Billy's older brother.
Music video
The music video for the song "Therefore I Am" was released on 12 November 2020. It premiered on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 p.m. PT. The music video is directed by Ailish. The clip was filmed in the abandoned Glendale Galleria shopping centre (in California), which Ailish has known well since his early teens.
Ailish spoke to Apple Music's Zane Lowe about the video:
"The video is a way of saying how this song feels to me - sloppy and effortless. The video was shot on an iPhone and, in the end, it came out in a way we never even imagined."
The singer described the video as "random" and "chaotic" and said the clip was shot overnight "with virtually no command whatsoever".
In the clip, Eilish runs around an empty mall, drinking fresh lemonade and eating a hot dog before stealing a bag of Chipotle. Then, Eilish walks up an escalator and eats pretzels and donuts while humming:
"I'm not your mate or anything / Hell, you think you're a man / I think, therefore I am."
Conclusion...
On Sunday, 22 November, Eilish will premiere the song at the American Music Awards, where she is nominated for two awards. The show will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
