Tricky - Fall to Pieces (2020) - All about the album

This album is a kind of window into the mind of an artist trying to work out something tragic and daring...

Listen to Fall to Pieces dark but irresistible - about the most extraordinary trip-hop album of 2020

Fall to Pieces is the fourteenth studio album by British trip hop musician Tricky. The record was released on September 4, 2020.

The recording shows the appearance of new guests in the person of Danish singer Oh Land and vocalist Marta Złakowska.

The album was based on a personal tragic event for Tricky - the death of his own daughter ...

Who is Tricky?

Tricky
Tricky

Tricky (real name - Adrian Tows) - British trip-hop musician, one of the founders of this genre. Tricky is a prominent member of the Bristol underground scene. The great success of the musician is due to his unique style of performance, which combines cantilena with recitative.

Although he is notorious for his mysteriousness, the musician has been lowering his guard more and more lately. In 2019, his autobiography titled "Hell Right Around the Corner" was released. In the book, Tricky talks about his upbringing, riddled with racism, crime and devastating loss...

Today Tricky is the pioneer of trip-hop! Each of his works is distinguished by a dark, very layered musical style, in which genres such as hip-hop, alternative rock, ragga are harmoniously intertwined ...

During his long career (since 1994) Tricky has worked with many artists including Terry Hall, Björk, Gravediggaz, Grace Jones and PJ Harvey.

In May 2019, an irreparable tragedy overtook the musician - his daughter Mina died ... The girl suffered from depression for a long time and, ultimately, committed suicide at the age of 24.

Tricky later wrote on his Facebook:

“It feels like I'm in a world that doesn't exist… I know nothing will ever be the same again. No words can explain that my soul is empty…”

Album concept

This grief darkens the mood of Fall To Pieces… The album consists of short tracks that end, appear and disappear again as abruptly as bursts of drowsy restlessness during a restless night's sleep. The lyrics, for the most part, are brief excerpts from the musician's own internal monologue. They are open to interpretation, but sometimes they are painfully simple: “What a fucking game! I hate this fucking pain"

Tracks

"Thinking Of" is the intro track from Fall To Pieces. He has a powerful character, but even this does not help to extinguish the depression that Tricky had to face ...

"Close Now" shows how the vocals of Tricky and Marta Złakowska are harmoniously intertwined... "Don't let it confuse you" is a strong chant that successfully dilutes the meager one and a half minute track.

Playful soundscapes and precocious melodies from Danish singer Oh Land (aka Nanna Eland Fabricius) make "I'm In the Doorway" a relaxing respite from the heavy nature of Fall to Pieces...

The most solemn moment of the album occurs on the song "Hate This Pain"! Here Tricky bravely reveals his most tender and vulnerable sides as he faces the reality of losing a child...

"Fall Please" is the artist's unapologetic take on pop music and is also the lead single from Fall to Pieces. Syncopated rhythms and a bit of industrial style make this track more edgy than most pop songs. His brilliance is undeniable.

The sultry nature of "Like a Stone" gives way to the album's last two tracks, "Throws Me Around" and "Vietnam", which are impeccably built and deftly executed.

Sound experiments

As personal as Tricky's grief was, his collaborators played a significant role in shaping the sound and feel of the album as a whole.

Marta Złakowska is an amazing vocalist that Tricky found during the European tour: the musician was left without a vocalist just before the premiere! It was then that he was lucky enough to meet Martha, who saved a major tour from failure ...

“I immediately see when a person seeks to get a star from the sky,” Tricky commented on his choice, “But Martha absolutely does not care about fame! She just loves to sing, and this is her magnificence ... "

It is worth emphasizing that Marta really has the perfect voice for vocal performer Tricky! Its spectral tones resemble a light wisp of smoke...

It is impossible to ignore how Marie-Claire Schlameus's cello and Christoph Hahn's slide guitar crawl through the arrangements with the sophistication of art thieves...

It's a pity, though, that some of the album's electronic touches are the minimalistic drum pattern (like on "Thinking Of") or the pale-sounding bass line on "I'm in the Doorway"... They seem rudimentary compared to the delicate accents of the rest of the records. But… in some cases, electronic experiments do play an important role!

Criticism

In general, Fall to Pieces was warmly received by critics ... The album received many positive reviews and an average rating of 73 points out of 100 from numerous reviews in various publications.

Conclusion…

Tricky acts more as a producer here, because most of the tracks are performed by Polish vocalist Marta Zlakowska.

In general, Fall to Pieces can be described as a "daring cry of the soul", which, in the end, finds the strength to break out, while its other "carriers" can forever withdraw into themselves ...

Listening to Fall to Pieces is dark but compelling. This album is a kind of window into the mind of an artist trying to work through something tragic and daring... This is one of Tricky's most cohesive and interesting albums to date: he masterfully turned his grief into a work of art that provides immense solace to those who seek it...
