At birches and pines (2015) - Yuri Antonov and Grigory Leps

About the legendary song and no less legendary duet...

Duet of Yuri Antonov and Grigory Leps "At the birches and pines": success, idea, number of views ...

“At the Birches and Pines” is the famous hit by Yuri Mikhailovich Antonov, which became a loud hit for many years to come ... Actually, this Russian genius cannot create anything else: only masterpieces under the sign “out of time”. This song was born and first sounded in the early 70s. And now, after almost half a century, the duet of Antonov and Grigory Leps gave this composition a second wind! In 2015, the song "At the Birches and Pines" was performed as part of the musical television project "Main Stage": as a result, the recording of the performance simply blew up the Internet, and in particular YouTube, having collected millions of views and thousands of likes! Let's talk about this stunning success, as well as about the song itself and its performers in more detail.

A little about the song...

In fact, the history of this song dates back to 1971: it was at this time that Yuri Mikhailovich moved to the capital (before that, the composer lived in Leningrad) and, soon, became the soloist of the Sovremennik variety orchestra. Soon Antonov has his own group: "Magistral"! Together with his team, the composer began to tour a lot and gather huge halls ... But it was thanks to Anatoly Kroll, the head of the above-mentioned Sovremennik, that Antonov was able to record 3 songs on Melodiya (together with the orchestra itself): “Third Day”, “Well to do with him "and, in fact," By the birches and pines "...

The author of the words is the poet Igor Shaferan (he also composed the lyrics of the song "On Kashtanova Street", another Antonov's cult hit). The arrangement, pleasant to the ear, is the merit of Anatoly Osherovich himself: by the way, it was also his initiative to use the Beatles melody, but we will return to this moment a little later. In the meantime, let's move on to the most interesting: a duet of two wonderful performers - Yuri Antonov and Grigory Leps!

Duet of Antonov and Leps...

After more than 40 years, the legendary hit has found a new, fresher and higher quality sound as part of the musical entertainment TV project "Main Stage"! Speaking of the project: "The Main Stage" has become the rating flagship show of the Russia-1 TV channel. In fact, this is an adaptation of the popular British project The X Factor. The aim of the project is to show the country and the world new talents! The participants take turns performing on the stage, trying to make the maximum impression on the audience and members of the jury, on whom it depends: who will reach the final and go on their own tour of Russia, and who will return home ... So, the collaboration between Leps and Antonov took place within the first season of the show , in 2015. Grigory Viktorovich became the host of the project (together with Garik Martirosyan), and Yuri Mikhailovich became one of the jury members. So, during one of the releases, these two literally blew up the hall (and later the entire Internet), performing “At the Birches and Pines” ... So pure, strong, soulful - as if the song was originally written specifically for this duet! The public liked their joint version so much that subsequently they performed it more than once on the leading channels of Russia ...

It is noteworthy that Leps performed this composition earlier, as part of the eighth international competition for young performers "New Wave 2009"!

And the duet with Yuri Antonov was not the only one that brought the musician such great success: in 2016, Leps and rapper Timati recorded the joint track “Let me go”. And for the song “Leave in English” (with Ani Lorak), the honored artist became the winner of the “MUZ-TV Prize”!

Success!

But let's get back to why we, in fact, are here today! So, the composition "At the birches and pines" performed by Leps and Antonov again found a huge success! The video with their joint performance was published on YouTube in June 2015: at the moment (a little more than five years later) it has collected 16 and a half million views and almost 80 thousand likes! Needless to say, this is a real, and most importantly, fully deserved success?

Fans and just listeners who accidentally stumbled upon this video are delighted! The recording from the project has collected thousands of comments that are full of respect, admiration, gratitude…

“Just super! It went to hell! Well done Antonov: he cut hits for a hundred years ahead! / It's just brilliant! A unique performance ... / I listen again and again as if for the first time! That's great! Well done!"

This is what a timeless classic really sounds like...

Interesting to know…

The Beatles
The Beatles

Well, now, as promised at the beginning of the article, we return to the topic with the Beatles: what do they and the song “At the Birches and Pines” have to do with it? We are sure that the real fans of the iconic Liverpool Four immediately understood what was the matter ...

... and the fact is, in 1967 the Beatles released their most iconic album: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. And here it is impossible not to single out the track "A Day In The Life", or rather its loss: the resemblance to Antonov's hit on the face! In fact, no one has ever denied it. Let's listen to what Anatoly Kroll said about this:

“The Beatles melody was indeed borrowed specifically for this song (meaning “At the birches and pines”). It was my idea: in my opinion, this is not plagiarism, but a friendly handshake between the wonderful melodies of the Beatles and the wonderful melodies of Yura Antonov ... He liked my idea, and he agreed without hesitation! In my opinion, it was the perfect solution…”

And really: what difference does it make who actually owns this loss? After all, even if the melody was borrowed, it was only for the good! So, now we have a great hit, which once again reminds us of a great British band! Well, as for "plagiarism", in the Soviet Union, many VIAs took the tunes of the "Liverpool Four" and simply changed the text to Russian! And Yuri Mikhailovich also inserted a “note quote” into his unique melody. So - the song "At the birches and pines" cannot be included in the list of "stolen hits".
