Pat Benatar - "We Belong" (Pat Benatar - "We Belong" - 1984)

Dan Navarro: "...I'm thrilled, because this song is still relevant even after all these years.... It's an extraordinary thing, very close to everyone..."

Pat Benatar Song Story - We Belong

"For worse or for better... We belong together," Pat Benatar sang from the stage in 1984... The legendary "We Belong" brought the performer not only gold, but triple the popularity! The lyric tells the story of a woman stuck in a relationship... But she is too in love and too attached to ruin everything.

Songwriting We Belong (Pat Benatar)

The lyric was written by friends Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro, who are widely known as the duo Lowen & Navarro. In his interview, Dan decided to share his memories of the circumstances under which the most popular song in Pat Benatar's discography was written:

"...At that time Eric and I were recording as the duo Lowen & Navarro, but things weren't going as smoothly as I would have liked... In addition to the studio, I had a family business that I couldn't leave behind. So my commitment to Eric and I had to work together had diminished. And one day he said to me, "You've got to go." You know what happened? He was my best friend, and yet he kicked me out... After that, we didn't speak to each other for six weeks. He didn't write a single song in that time! He wrote four songs in his whole life. I was one of the main writers in that band..."

"...So he rang me up and says, 'Let's get together and write a song. Let's get together just for the sake of it." I agreed, because he was my friend. I tried to put aside my anger, my pain... It took us 90 minutes to write that song. And a year later, "We Belong" was in the top five! That song is the kind of miracle that almost never happens!"

According to Navarro, in his song he was "kind of lamenting an old relationship..."

"...There are just some things that are bigger than both of you, and you belong together..."

The release of the composition and its achievements
