Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (Pink Floyd)

"...Sid makes me feel so sad...For years I saw him as a threat, but it turns out he was our creative center..."

Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd): the story of the legendary and most personal Pink Floyd album…

Roger Waters on Wish You Were Here: "This album is an intimate story about me, us, Syd..."

Despite the difficulties that accompany the work on Wish You Were Here, the album adequately adorned the discography of the British band. He let the emotions, and the madness of each of the band members, be finally heard...

Album history

The concept, lyrics and even the basic melodies are by Roger Waters. The album is based on the tragic fate of one of the founders of the psychedelic band - Syd Barrett. It is to him that Waters turns in his work, exhausted by the burden of an endless sense of guilt ... In fact, he expelled Barrett from the group. Strong initially, he would later say:

“... Without Sid, we would not have taken place as a group. But we wouldn't be able to move forward with him! For a long time I tried to understand myself, my feelings… If Dark Side Of The Moon is about madness in general, then this album is a secret story about me, about us, about Sid…”

Album Creation: Lyrics and Melody

The album opens with a legendary composition that probably needs no introduction... Shine On You Crazy Diamond celebrates Barrett's madness, his creative apotheosis, and at the same time mourns his withdrawal into himself...

The mournful hypnotic riff at the very beginning of the song was the result of a lot of trial and error in the course of the musicians' search for fresh ideas ...

The unique synth rush was the band's second studio breakthrough. Since there were no samplers or digital equipment yet, the musicians had to resort to a trick: to overlay two synthesizers on top of each other. Thus, the effect of the whole orchestra was obtained ...

In the text, Waters tried to reflect as accurately as possible his attitude towards Sid, his creativity and madness ... With the passage of time, he began to realize all the tragedy and destructiveness of immersion in himself ... He was devoured by a sense of guilt, because it was he who insisted on the expulsion of Barrett from the group ... Roger always interested in success. And when it came, along with it came an understanding: you have to pay for everything in this life ...

Gilmour also had pangs of conscience:

“…Sid makes me so sad…For years I saw him as a threat, but it turned out that he was our creative center…He was an important part of Pink Floyd, it was with him that we recorded our first material! He became the personification of absolute alienation ... And I understand him, because sometimes only this helps to endure all this darkness, which is commonly called modern life ... "

The eponymous Wish You Were Here also deserves attention, the text of which was written before the musical accompaniment (which is very rare for Roger). In it, Waters reflects on the contradiction of the "two halves" of his schizoid personality. On the one hand, he felt like a kind man who cares about the welfare of the people around him. But on the other hand, he recognizes himself as an arrogant egoist ...

With the phrase “I wish you were here,” Roger calls out to the best side of himself. At the same time, it serves as a sad address to Sid...

Pink Floyd Memories and Album Achievements

Later, the musicians recalled the work on Wish You Were Here as a rather difficult time for each of them ... Then it seemed that the moment of their irrevocable discord was still very far away! But time took its toll.

Wish You Were Here has become a golden classic both in Pink Floyd's career and in the world of rock music in general! The record became not only influential for world culture, but also the most beloved, in many ways - secret for the band members themselves ... Many tried to unravel the secret - why exactly this Pink Floyd album turned out to be extremely luxurious? Perhaps it's all about the sincerity of the lyrics. After all, Waters put his own soul, emotions and experiences of the musicians of the group as a whole into each of them ... Each of them was sad about Sid in his own way, and this is a fact. But there is another version. Perhaps Wish You Were Here just became the last album in the history of the band, while working on which they were still one close-knit team ...
