History of the song "Whole Lotta Love" (1969) by Led Zeppelin
Содержание
The history of "Whole Lotta Love" is very interesting. Firstly, it is worth saying that this is the first single of Led Zeppelin, which became a hit and was included in various charts and lists of the best rock songs. Secondly, one of the first court cases about plagiarism of the band is connected with this composition, Willie Dixon sued them. Of course, the claim was not from nothing. Robert Plant used lines from Dixon's song "You Need Love," which he had written for Muddy Waters. As Led Zeppelin's version was much more explicit, Dixon didn't like it... So he started to sue for the rights to the song and, of course, for the money the song brought. However, as with all subsequent Led Zeppelin cases, the case was concluded in favour of the devilishly talented guys!
What is remarkable in this story is that Dixon's song has been used before by other bands, such as The Small Faces, but he did not sue them... I guess the bar of success was not the same....
The myth of losing
Legend has it that Jimmy Page came up with the riff on stage during one of his concerts when he was improvising. This fable was started by the band's bassist John Paul Jones.
However, the man responsible for this miracle himself, Jimmy Page, has refuted this speculation:
It wasn't like that at all... The composition came about when we were making the second album. I had a guitar riff that we started to build the song around. I came up with the riff in my houseboat on the Thames in Pangbourne, UK. It was in the summer of 1968. Probably because of my love of long playbacks at the beginning, this move was born. These intros are often found in country rock, and that's where I got my inspiration from. Once the riff was ready, it was clear that it was more powerful than I expected and that it wasn't just going to be an intro, it was going to pull the whole song together. A few weeks later the band and I rehearsed the first album in a hotel... I played the riff and everyone loved it. It stirred our imagination, because it had some kind of mystery in it... We were attracted to it....
Graduation and first success
The song was released in late 1969 as a single from the second studio album "Led Zeppelin II". The label that handled the release was the famous Atlantic Records. Already six months later, the number of copies of "Whole Lotta Love" exceeded 1 million, and the whole album had sold more than 3 million copies by that time.
There was a fierce battle in the charts between The Beatles' "Abbey Road" album and Led Zeppelin II by Led Zeppelin. Many charts in different countries had the song in the top 10, and it often reached No. 1...
