The story behind the hit song "All That She Wants" by Ace Of Base...
Содержание
"All That She Wants" is a widely known song by the band Ace of Base, released as a hit single from the album Happy Nation. Interesting fact: the drum rhythm was inspired by the song "Another Mother" by Kayo. The composition has a distinct reggae-pop character, and the insightful lyrics tell the story of a promiscuous woman:
"When she awoke in the light of late morning.
And her day had just begun,
She opened her eyes and thought:
"Oh, what a morning!
This day is not for work.
It's a day to sunbathe!"""
The song quickly became an international hit: upon release, it became a smash hit, reaching number one in more than ten countries! In America, the single was awarded platinum status... Let's remember the story behind its creation!
Where did it all start?
As mentioned above, the inspiration came from the track "Another Mother" by Kayo. As a result, Ace Of Base recorded what became their breakthrough hit, which also had a positive impact on the sales of the Happy Nation album itself! But how did it come about? And what does this have to do with singer Kayo? Let's find out...
It all started when the band released a demo version of their future hit: it was called "Mr. Ace". Before that they had already released "Wheel of Fortune", but... as such - this release was not a success. As for "All That She Wants", soon after its release it became clear to everyone that it was not exactly the sound that Ace Of Base members were trying to achieve... They looked for inspiration in other artists' works for a long time, but everything was in vain... Until singer Kayo released her track "Another Mother"! The song entered the top 20, and the drum rhythm from it made an indelible impression on Ace Of Base... That is - without "Another Mother" there might not have been the hit that we all know today! But, fortunately, the circumstances turned out in the most beautiful way...
Challenges and record...
But, as it often happens, soon the band had some difficulties... "All That She Wants" was re-recorded: the track was in major tonality and changed its vector to minor. According to Ace Of Base members, it was done to increase the feeling of sadness and depth of sound... By the way: gloomy mood of "All That She Wants" was reflected on the most part of the album... Yes, actually Happy Nation has quite gloomy sound, but it's a separate story. Back to the song!
When the track was re-recorded, Ace Of Base contacted the producer of "Another Mother" Dennis Pop: the band sent a demo version of the future hit, which, in fact, did not inspire Dennis at all... And again circumstances turned out in the most favourable way for Ace Of Base! The cassette with the track got stuck in the player in Pop's car! So the producer was forced to listen to the song over and over again... Finally he agreed to work on the track. It's worth noting that he made a lot of changes, for example: instead of rapping, short phrases were included, as well as an additional verse. And while in the original version of "All That She Wants" the vocals are sung by all the band members, in the final version Jenny's vocals were cut...
The end result "All That She Wants" was generously endowed with shades of reggae-pop... It's a sound that eventually became Ace Of Base's signature. As for Denneez Pop, he and the band also reunited to work on some tracks from The Bridge.
Graduation and... success!
"All That She Wants" was released as a single from the iconic Happy Nation! It later topped the charts in over ten countries around the world, including the UK and Greece! The track subsequently became a very big hit in America, where it was constantly being played on the radio. It also topped the Top 40 Mainstream... By the end of the decade, the single had sold nearly four million copies worldwide!

Not only listeners, but also critics received the creation of Ace Of Base and Deniz Pop very warmly... Many noted the melodic sound in reggae style, with mysterious flutes and explosive chorus. The lyric about the "stealer of men's hearts" was not overlooked... Many influential magazines wrote that together - lyrics and melody create an incredibly realistic picture that seems to unfold before your own eyes... It can be said that "All That She Wants" became the gold standard of the musical landscape of the 1990s....
Music video
The clip was filmed with the artist Christiane Bjorg Nielsen in the lead role. The filming partly took place in her flat. A total of two thousand dollars was allocated for them. Let's see:
As mentioned above, Jenny Berggren's vocals were cut out in "All That She Wants", so in the clip she simply lip-syncs the performance. The clip was an MTV bestseller: many found it very pure and sincere, with a happy ending... To date, the video has racked up over 90 million views.
