History of the song "Dreams" (1977) by Fleetwood Mac ("Fleetfood Mac" / "Fleetfood Mac")
"Dreams" is a song by American rock band Fleetwood Mac. For the first time, this touching composition saw the light in March 1977, as the second single from the eleventh, and best-selling, studio album of the group called Rumours.
The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Fleetwood Mac's first and only hit single: the record sold a million copies worldwide! "Dreams" also reached number one on the Canadian RPM Top 100 Singles!
At the end of 2020, forgotten lyrics have regained their wild popularity thanks to a viral video from TikTok! So, with the help of Nathan Apodak (the name of the blogger), the track again entered the music charts of the world, including Spotify and Apple Music!
But first things first... To begin with, we suggest recalling the history of the creation of a "dreamy" hit...
Background and history of creation ...
To begin with, it is worth noting that despite the global success, Rumors is not very well known in Russia ... Moreover! Many domestic listeners do not understand at all why Rumours became one of the best-selling albums of the 70s ... By the way: the disc not only brought the Fleetwood Mac group a Grammy, but also remained at the top of the American top for almost 8 weeks!
As for the musical content, there are some really great songs included in Rumors… But why is there so much hype around this release? It's simple: Fleetwood Mac has always known the main "ingredient" of a good record - accessible and attractive music that fully affects the listener's emotions ... And the emotions during the studio sessions, it should be noted, were in full swing ...
The fact is that the group was a kind of "family" team: Fleetwood Mac included 2 married couples! And so, by the time of the creation of Rumours, an apple of discord settled in the group: constant scandals, passions based on jealousy, showdown ... In general, a real “soap opera”.
The marriage of Kristin and John McVie was cracking at the seams ... As for Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, they constantly had loud quarrels at the studio ... Then they diverged, then converged again ... And although Mick Fleetwood's wife was not a member of the team, she, nevertheless, poured "oil on fire" with his betrayals of Miku with his best friend!
In an interview, Mick recalled:
“For us, getting together in the studio meant “sacrifice all our remaining nerves” ... After each re-finished session, we scattered like cockroaches ... We tried not to communicate with each other. In order not to just kill each other ... Every new morning we looked exhausted, but we still gathered in the studio for the sake of music ... "
And indeed: no matter how strange it may sound, but at some point the guys realized that despite personal contradictions, they still enjoy joint rehearsals ... And even more! It was the inner discord that inspired the creation of Rumours - an album with the most heartfelt songs in the history of Fleetwood Mac ... And this is not an exaggeration at all! Each composition from this release was addressed to one or another member of the band ... A kind of revelation that the guys were able to express with the help of music.
“Oddly enough, but it was our spiritual wounds that brought us closer ... Some incredible, simply anomalous connection reigned between us! We were driven by music, the desire to record an album… And we didn’t just want to record it, we wanted to throw out our sincere emotions and feelings… We all had to keep our personal feelings in one corner of the studio, remaining professionals in another…”
Memories of the recording were shared not only by the band members, but sound engineer Ken Calley:
“During the recording of the backing vocals for 'You Make Loving Fun', everyone sat separately from each other, facing me. They tried not to even look at each other! And if, for some reason, the recording was suspended ... Yes, a couple of seconds was enough for them to make a long farce! At such moments, I thought only of one thing: “Damn, where is the tape? Hurry, turn the tape on for recording!”
After reviewing the details of the creation of the album, we suggest moving on to the history of Dreams itself…
About the song "Dreams"...
The author of the composition is Stevie Nicks. Unlike her man, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie approached the writing of lyrics more responsibly, with restraint ... In some way, "Dreams" can be called a philosophical discourse about a love drama ...
“I entered the studio and silently handed the cassette to Lindsey ... Only my voice was recorded on it. Lindsey played the tune. He was angry with me, but raising his head, he looked and smiled… He understood what this song was about… As musicians, we still respected and appreciated each other…”
Curiously, at first "Dreams" was not liked by the other members of Fleetwood Mac ... However, it was she who brought the group their first number one in the States!
A new round of glory ....
The composition "Dreams" was released in 1977. It is not surprising that over the years, music lovers have begun to forget about it slowly ... But in 2020, the classic lyrics returned to the Billboard Hot 100 again! All thanks to a viral TikTok clip!
It all started with the fact that a man named Nathan Apodaka decided to get to work in a very extreme way - on a skateboard! Or rather, it was not he who decided so, but his car, which broke down halfway ... And so, getting to work on a skateboard and drinking juice, the man decided to make a video for TikTok. And as a musical accompaniment, he chose ... Right! Dreams by Fleetwood Mac!

Nathan himself admitted that the idea of the video was completely spontaneous ... But this did not prevent the popularity of the video! The video instantly went viral: in less than 2 weeks, it gained almost 10 million likes and more than 40 million views!
Soon there was a popular trend on TikTok called "Ocean Spray" (after the name of the juice), which included Mick Fleetwood himself! As Mick himself admitted, he started a TikTok account just for this ...

The sharp surge in popularity of the long-forgotten hit made The Weeknd very happy! On Twitter, the artist wrote that he is very happy to return Fleetwood Mac to the charts!
As for the group itself, it only remains to add that subsequently its line-up changed many, many times (which, in fact, is not surprising) ... Subsequent Fleetwood Mac albums became leaders on both sides of the ocean! The group is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is one of the best-selling in the world: their records have sold over 100 million copies!
