History of the song "Dreams" (1977) by Fleetwood Mac ("Fleetwood Mac")
Содержание
"Dreams" is a song by the American rock band Fleetwood Mac. It was first released in March 1977 as the second single from the band's eleventh and best-selling studio album, Rumours.
The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and became Fleetwood Mac's first and only hit single, selling millions of copies worldwide! "Dreams" also reached number one on the Canadian RPM Top 100 Singles!
Towards the end of 2020, a forgotten lyric regained raving popularity thanks to a viral video from TikTok! So, not without the help of Nathan Apodaca (blogger's name), the track is back on the music charts of the world, including Spotify and Apple Music!
But all in order... To begin with, we offer to recall the history of the creation of the "dreamy" hit.....
Background and history of the creation of the...
To begin with, it is worth noting that despite its worldwide success, Rumours is not very well known in Russia... Moreover! Many domestic listeners don't understand at all why Rumours became one of the best-selling albums of the 70s... By the way: the record not only brought Fleetwood Mac a Grammy, but also stayed at the top of the American top for almost 8 weeks!
As for the musical content, Rumours includes some really great songs... But why is there so much hype around this release? It's simple: Fleetwood Mac have always known the main "ingredient" of a good record - accessible and attractive music, which fully affects the emotions of the listener... And the emotions during the studio sessions, it should be noted, were boiling over...
The thing is that the band was a kind of "family" collective: Fleetwood Mac consisted of two married couples! And by the time Rumours was created, the apple of discord had settled in the band: constant scandals, jealousy-based passions, relationship troubles... All in all, a real "soap opera".
Christine and John McVie's marriage was cracking at the seams... As for Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, they were constantly having loud quarrels in the studio... They were breaking up and then getting back together... And although Mick Fleetwood's wife was not a member of the team, she was still adding "oil to the fire" by cheating on Mick with his best friend!
In his interview, Mick recalled:
"For us, getting together in the studio meant 'sacrificing all our remaining nerves'... After each newly finished session we scattered like cockroaches... We tried not to communicate with each other. So as not to kill each other... Every new morning we looked exhausted, but we still got together in the studio for the sake of music..."
And indeed: as strange as it may sound, at some point the guys realised that despite their personal contradictions, they still enjoyed rehearsing together... And even more! It was this internal strife that inspired the creation of Rumours, an album with some of the most heartfelt songs in Fleetwood Mac's history... And that's no exaggeration! Each song on this release was addressed to one or another member of the band... A kind of revelation that the guys were able to express through music.
Mick Fleetwood:
"Strange as it may seem, it was our soul wounds that brought us closer together... There was some incredible, simply abnormal connection between us! We were driven by music, by the desire to record an album... And we didn't just want to record it, we wanted to express our sincere emotions and experiences... We all had to keep our personal feelings in one corner of the studio, while remaining professional in the other...".
Memories of the recording were shared not only by the band members, but also by sound engineer Ken Callaway:
"During the recording of the backing vocals for 'You Make Loving Fun', everyone sat apart from each other, facing me. They tried not to even look at each other! And if, for some reason, the recording paused... Yes, it was enough for a couple of seconds to make a long mess! At such moments I was thinking only one thing: "Where's the film? Hurry up and put it on tape!'"
Having familiarised ourselves with the details of the album's creation, we suggest we move on to the story of 'Dreams' itself...
About the song "Dreams" ...
The author of the composition is Stevie Nicks. Unlike her man, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie approached the lyrics more responsibly, with restraint... In a way, "Dreams" can be called a philosophical discourse on love drama....
Stevie Nicks:
"I walked into the studio and silently handed the cassette to Lindsay... It only had my voice on it. "Lindsey played the melody. He was angry with me, but he looked up and smiled... He understood what the song was about... As musicians, we still had the same respect and appreciation for each other..."
Curiously enough, at first "Dreams" was not liked by the rest of Fleetwood Mac... However, it was the one that brought the band their first number one in the States!
A new round of glory....
The composition "Dreams" was released in 1977. Not surprisingly, over so many years music lovers started to forget about it slowly... But in 2020, the classic lyric is back on the Billboard Hot 100! All thanks to a viral music video from TikTok!
And it all started when a man named Nathan Apodaca decided to get to work in a very extreme way - on a skateboard! Or rather, it was not him, but his car, which broke down halfway... And so, getting to work on a skateboard and drinking juice, the man decided to make a video for TikTok. And as a musical accompaniment he chose... Right! "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac!

Nathan himself admitted that the idea for the video was completely spontaneous... But that didn't stop it from going viral! The video instantly went viral: in less than 2 weeks it gained almost 10 million likes and more than 40 million views!
A popular trend called "Ocean Spray" (after the name of the juice) soon appeared on TikTok, and Mick Fleetwood himself took part in it! As Mick himself admitted, he made a TikTok account just for the sake of it....

The Weeknd is very happy about the surge in popularity of the long-forgotten hit! On Twitter, the artist wrote that he was very happy to see Fleetwood Mac back on the charts!
As for the band itself, the only thing left to add is that its line-up has changed many, many times since (not surprisingly)... Fleetwood Mac's subsequent albums have topped the charts on both sides of the ocean! The band has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is one of the best-selling bands in the world: their records have sold over 100 million copies!
