Elvis Costello discussed his album 'The Boy Named If' with Elton John on Apple Music 1's 'Rocket Hour' radio programme
During their conversation, Costello tells John about the process of recording "The Boy Named If" with members of his band, scattered across the different venues, as well as the key role each musician brings to the band, saying:
Pete has an old Gretsch rig that he played on the very first record we recorded together, a model from that year. He set it up in his basement, it's now his practice kit, and he was in his basement during the recording. And there's something to be said about the rhythm section of our songs together, consisting of my voice and his drums. I know the bass player plays his usual role, but there's something about that connection between my singing and his drums. And because we had that as a starting point, everything else fell into place.
In creating the record, Costello says he's. put the task of not relaxing, in light of their musical experience, having collaborated for many years with the members of the band. As a result, the album "The Boy Named If" was the presentation of the ongoing creative growth in the band's extensive discography.
He says to Costello:
There's so much energy in this record, you've made a lot of records with a lot of energy, but you haven't made a record like this in a very, very long time. You're one of those musicians that I love because you're always trying to do something new, fresh, different... And you're one of those artists that just do what they want to do.
