According to the guitarist, "It's My Life" is a very encouraging and lighthearted song inspired by... Frank Sinatra!
"This song was planned as something light and inspirational... Actually, it turned out that way! The idea to write 'It's My Life' came to us spontaneously... In the band John often identified himself with Frank Sinatra, and one day it inspired him a lot!"

The reference to the immortal hit is a highlight invented by the band's leader. But his colleague Sambora didn't immediately like the idea... Bon Jovi later said:
"I'd just got back from filming and I was overwhelmed with inspiration inspired by Frank Sinatra... He's the best role model, in my opinion... I told Richie about it and he said, 'You just can't write those stupid lyrics!' "You're the only one who likes Sinatra." But I went ahead and wrote the song... I'm very happy with it!"

In the aftermath, Richie Sambora, who was so opposed to mentioning Frank Sinatra and his legendary creation in the song, admitted:
"You know what's really interesting? For so many years I've noticed a curious pattern: this song is equally liked by girls and guys, young and old... I mean everyone! It's loved by everyone, whether they're sixteen or sixty! It's My Life" evokes the same warm feelings in everyone... And everyone thinks of something different when listening to it... I, for example, think of my daughter Ava: I want to believe that this song will inspire her to do many things... Isn't that a miracle?"
For his part, Bon Jovi was quite surprised by this kind of success for the song. And not only that:
